Resolution Switching defaulting SD content to 720P

Server Version#:Nvidia Shield 2017 (All up to date)
Player Version#:Nvidia Shield 2017 (All up to date)

Hi, after looking into the plex player settings ( on shieldtv 2017 ) and setting auto resolution switching ON, this should allow TV / Display ( mine being 1080P ) to do any of the scaling work,
mostly ok, however any SD content 704 x 576P, 720 x 576P, 480i ( direct off of the DVD ) ALL get Auto switched to 720 ( TV showing Res its being fed… )

720 x 576P showing Display Title ( whatever that is? ) as 480, even though detects 576 resolution…

That’s not what that setting does. Resolution switching means to switch the resolution of the TV to match the video (i.e. the TV’s resolution mode). If your TV is only switching to 720, that likely means it is unable to switch to 480p mode. If you can reproduce and provide the logs from the Plex client logs on the Shield, that will reveal what modes the app detected your TV being capable of and which mode it chose to use.

With that setting off, the Shield will do the scaling. It has a pretty good scaler so I would let it. However, if you prefer to have the TV do the scaling, you’ll need to change the output of the Shield manually to the resolution you want. Again, that assumes the Shield can find a matching resolution your TV says it can do.

ok, so i enabled, logging in the plex player app on Shield,
log.txt (4.2 MB)

it mentions falling back to 1920x1080 59.94Hz (that is what the main setting is under the Shields display setting…

Right, so the app could not find a resolution to match the video and picked 1280x720 as the closet. It appears to be working at that resolution for about 43 minutes, then the hdmi disconnected and reconnected for some reason and playback failed. It recovered and reused that resolution, but the playback still failed, so it switched the resolution to 1920x1080.

I don’t know what caused the hdmi disconnect or why the video failed after recovering, but this is all expected behavior when something does fail.

thanks for the reply, is there a way to force a handshake between Shield and TV to see what detected modes are ?

Thanks.

Yes just unplug and replug the hdmi cable from the Shield to the TV. That info is already in your logs.

Different suggestion: upgrade to a 2019 or newer Shield Pro.
Disable the resolution switching in the Plex app.
Enable nVidia’s own “AI-Upscaling”.

I don’t think you’ll regret it.
