Now I know this has been suggested a few of times before (1, 2, 3), but hear me out — things may have changed since those requests, or perhaps I’ve misunderstood the problem.
The reason given for not having autofocus on search seems to have been that once the search box is focused, users can no longer see the Recent searches or Aural fixations kept in the search pane. Now I don’t remember if something previously used to hide those sections on search-box focus, but currently (on desktop) this no longer seems to be the case.
Clicking in the search box now doesn’t seem to affect the display of recent searches or aural fixations, which remain visible until the user starts typing. This feels like a sensible behaviour, and one which wouldn’t be affected by having the box autofocus on arrival at the search pane. It would of course also be drastically more intuitive than the work-around of double-clicking on the search icon (which I had to look up).
I have to agree, this is still my biggest annoyance with Plexamp. I have to click the search icon three times to focus the input area. Two maybe I could understand, but three just seems like a mistake.
i think on desktop a single click could work, now that we don’t hide Aural Fixations until you start typing (it’s two clicks right now, not three, right?)
Yeah, two clicks works for me on Windows at the moment.
Thanks for considering autofocus for desktop. I think it would certainly improve the search experience and align better with desktop user expectations.
