Automatic subtitle synchronisation

Let me start with a praise: I love the new(-ish) feature of on-demand subtitles search and download. It really removed a pain point of my daily Plex use.

Quite often tho, the subtitle downloaded doesn’t have a perfect time sync, especially the non-english ones, and that is quite aggravating after a while.

I just came across this https://github.com/smacke/subsync which is a project aiming at automatic subtitle scoring and synchronisation, using both the video or a previously scored subtitle as reference.

It seems to work pretty good! In goes the video file and the horrible subtitle file, out comes a nicely synced subtitle file. In just a matter of seconds!

I think it would be an awesome addition to the Plex experience. Hope you feel the same.

great idea!

This is a fantastic idea but in the mean time I wish they would just allow you to manually adjust forward or back so that you can sync them up yourself… seems like it would a simple feature.

Actually, I think manually adjusting it it’s way more complex.

Beside the subtitle time-shifting, it requires an interface to control how much to shift it, probably in different places (playback controls, episode/movie details page, settings?) and across the different platforms and versions.

The automatic synching is just something the server does behind the scenes, with potentially zero knowledge from the user and the interface.

I agree - Subtitles are a place where Plex REALLY falls down.
I’m prettydeaf so for me, subs are a must.
I like the upload feature but w/o the ability to adjust sync + or -N secs or hundreds of second it doesn’t help much.

I w2as trying to watch House S02Ep18.

I found and Uploaded probably 20 sub files - mostly from opensubtitles.org and subdl.com.
ALL were out of sync - from a couple of secs to more than 20.
A Huge waste of time and very frustrating.

I think Plex should simply copy the subtitle features in GOM Player -incl. the subtitle manager. (Grab it if you haven’t seen it - a wonderful, clever app.)
I’m a programmer (amongst other things) and I KNOW this is not a difficult task.

Without the ability to sync, plex’s handling of subs is simply useless.

SYNCing is almost always the biggest problem with subtitles

Best wishes to all.

great idea. Now i can do it pretty quick with http://www.srtfix.com/

use this site then : http://www.srtfix.com/

Through my Xbox One Plex app, I’m able to manually adjust the subtitles to fit. It takes me about 5 minutes to get subtitles lined up, but at least I have the option to use it. I haven’t seen that feature in the web version or Roku version yet.

Yes very useful.

Isn’t this a feature that’s more suited to a video editing application? In the end Plex is just a player, preparing the video correctly (subs/tagging/etc) should ideally be done before the file is added to the library, no?

Plex is no longer just a player. DVR content is processed and added to the library with no user action. The only time I turned on subs was watching DVR content. The subs were out of sync 14 seconds (+14000ms.) Being that late makes me think it must have something to do with the removal of commercials.

Any improvement is welcome.

This project also seems to be interesting: GitHub - kaegi/alass: "Automatic Language-Agnostic Subtitle Synchronization"

Such a feature should be native indeed :+1::+1::+1:
