The last time I attempted optimizing my libraries was when I was paying for a cheap cloud server and using Amazon Cloud Drive. The server struggled (understandably) when trying to transcode pretty much any request so I started optimizing every library because storage was so cheap and all the movies started playing great. However, since Amazon pretty much gave up on its unlimited storage venture I had to migrate everything locally again. I didn’t transfer the optimized files over because my local machine can handle everything pretty easily but it seems that I am now running into what seems to be a pretty common issue, 4k files are difficult to transcode on the fly. I don’t want to separate my movie libraries by quality and I don’t want to optimize everything, eating up unnecessary storage space. So my question is, does Plex offer an option to basically optimize anything over a certain quality, i.e. greater than 1080p, to a set quality? For example, can I tell Plex to only optimize 4k quality videos that are added to a library to 1080p rather than optimizing the entire library? I am willing to collect movies at the greater quality now and view them in 1080p currently so I can watch them at their full quality later when prices drop on newer technology that is able to handle real time transcoding of 4k media. If this is a feature and I just missed something please let me know, otherwise, is there a possibility of creating this feature?
