Automatically select conversion types

Thanks for reading my post.

I was wondering if there is a way in the server settings, to let my server automatically select the right conversion for each user.

Like this:
user X of my server wants to watch movie X on his mobile phone. In that way, the server detects user X’s phone and chooses the mobile conversion I’ve made. And so on for Universal TV etc…

Or is this only possible the manual way? Because it’s always a pain in the ass to explain this to new users.

Thanks in advance

Usually the server and client will “negotiate” what version is best suited. That being said – often the mobile client might be perfectly capable to play the non-optimized version and therefore go for that. Similarly, if none of the optimized versions are a perfect match for what the client is looking for, the server might transcode the video on-the-fly based on the best available quality.

Ok perfect!
So if I manage 4 optimized versions (like iOs, android, Universal tv and something Else…) Plex server client does the search work for me and the active user. So nothing has to be selected by the user itself?

Yep – except Plex won’t pick the optimized version by name/designation but the client capabilities.

So it doesn’t even matter the file is in a random folder? It can be in any folder of Plex?

After that I think my question is answered

Sorry, I don’t understand what you mean…

So for example:
C:/Plex/Movies/(sub-folders with movies)

So what I try to explain is: it doesn’t matter if the conversion type of a movie is in sub-folder X or sub-folder X1 or sub-folder X2?

Because you referred that Plex won’t pick the optimized version by name/designation but the client capabilities.

Or do I undertstand you wrong?

My statement was aiming at Plex not considering any optimization profiles… if you create an optimized version with a specific profile (e.g. Optimize > Custom > iOS) that doesn’t mean the iOS app will pick up that version if it deems another version to be better suited.

You can place different quality versions of the same video in different folders but that’s not necessary or helping; it’ll usually be easier to place those in the same movie folder.
