My Samsung series 8 smart TV just updated to the latest player version. I have autoplay set but the player will stop after a few episodes. I preferred it when it played continuously until I stopped it or it ran out of episodes for the series.
This is actually how Plex designed it

Auto-advance refers to the countdown timer on the Up Next item, which plays automatically once exhausted. It will be shown whenever there’s an Up Next item, except in the following circumstances:
- If videos have been playing without user intervention for more than two hours, and the video that just completed is > 20 minutes in length. In this case, the Up Next item will still be shown and selected such that a single click plays it.
There’s a feature suggestion requesting an option to actually play videos continuously without such limitations.
It may be how they designed it, but until the latest update on my Samsung Smart TV, that is not what it was doing. I prefer the continuous play as it was before the update. I don’t have a problem with them adding the option in the settings to continuous play on, play 2 hours and stop without user intervention, or autoplay off. Also the autoplay feature suggestion thread you linked to, has been going on since Feb 2018. To me that shows that the people developing Plex give little or no care for this feature.
