TL;DR Update FFMPEG/MPV and fix playback logic
It’s been bugging me since ages that the newer plex gets, the worse it becomes. Mainly Plex Player.
But that is one of many things, the problem I have at the moment is AV1 and a few other formats/configurations that don’t work or stopped working with new Plex player (but work on PMP).
AV1. Introduced ~Q1 2018, latest/stable Q1 2019.
FFMPEG added Decoding support ~Q3 2019, encoding a bit later.
“Plex Transcoder” is ffmpeg version 1.6-fa235d69f6-2 Copyright (c) 2000-2019 the FFmpeg developers
Can’t find the “Plex Universal Transcoder” on the latest beta Plex Server release.
So, when will you update ffmpeg? Since the transcoder you use shows AV1 as ..V.L. av1 Alliance for Open Media AV1 means that it’s a pre Q3 2019 release or something else, since it was modified by Plex team.
A ffmpeg release from late 2019 can encode and decode AV1.
So you’ve been holding off support for this codec for ~1.5 years.
And probably some other configurations, performance improvements and a few extras.
Most of the time the management is to blame for not properly directing the staff.
The point of Plex is Media Management and Playback. I won’t comment attempts of branching out, but do keep focus on the core features of your software.
And nothing stops Plex Player from playing AV1 since it’s using mpv-1.dll v0.32.0, a year out of date and should get updated, but supports AV1 to my knowledge.
Tho I must say that Plex Player was not able to play some videos that PMP is able to play. Which means some stupid logic is at play. And they were not AV1, duh.
And I’m talking about “Direct Play” on both applications, where one works and the other doesn’t. That’s bullshit and probably some logic code that stops that. I forgot what media can’t be played, but I will find it and complain sometime later.
Conclusion: See TL;DR, thanks
