how do i turn this crap off for all my users, even a popup ad for it when the app is opened

I got an entry ad, three ads at 10 minutes, and three more at 30 minutes. I have not had a chance to test longer than that, but the frequency seems fair. I was a little concerned when it might look like every 10 minutes, but less so now.

the feature is not server centric. don’t need a server at all.

iOS and Android were released today can show up at different times for different folks. Amazon store usually take a bit longer to get updates available

you can only turn it off for MANAGED users (and of course yourself).

anyone with their own plex account will have to disable it themselves, the same way that podcasts/news/webshows are disabled.

plex web > settings > account > online media sources

also, I just checked mine, and managed users were disabled by default.

I have a 480p copy of Moonstruck that curb-stomps the ā€œ1080pā€ version I am looking at. I didn’t get an opening ad-block or internal logistics would show me leaving when that began - never to be seen again… 13 minutes… and counting…lol

That should always be the case with new features like this.

Titles are in 2.0 stereo or 5.1 surround, depending on what the studio/distributor has for the title. Glad to see HD is looking good! Titles are encoded using H.264 and streamed via HLS/DASH over a CDN. Each title has multiple renditions (different bitrates, resolutions) and the stream automatically adjusts based on your network conditions and playback device.

Confirmed this title has not been rated, even on IMDB. We’ll be marking unrated titles with ā€œNot Ratedā€ soon. As of now, though, unrated titles should not be viewable by kids managed user accounts.

Will VOD become available on PMP?

It’s being looked into. DRM is an issue with it at the moment.

The 1080p titles do indeed look nice on PlexWeb, on a 1080p 27-inch screen. I was looking at non-grainy material, which I’m sure helps. I’ll test on the TV later just for fun.

The selection is a bit limited for my taste, but it’s a good start. I imagine more is in the pipeline (based on recent stories) once you have this kickstarted and live.

I’ll tell you, I’ve noticed a huge variance in quality coming from the distributors. Some of it is great quality, well encoded, while others (usually the smaller indie titles) are not nearly as good quality. We’re working to preserve the quality that we get as best we can, while pushing our partners to provide us with better source material.

We’re expanding the catalog daily, and actually there’s a lot more content in there than what’s showing up in the hubs. Try looking at the related items in a pre-play screen. BTW, we’re looking at adding more ways to browse through and sort the VOD catalog.

On the topic of hiding the content, would it not be possible to hide this with labels like any other library? It’s odd that I don’t see settings for the specific library. All I do see is Unpin from the sidebar. This would allow admins to assign labels or ratings accordingly to managed users.

I’m doing a little more random spot-checking this morning, and that’s definitely the case. Some movies look like they’re broadcast quality (at least to modern Comcast standards), others noticeably have halos around everything and various blocking.

I’m fascinated by the ā€œdanceā€ the broadcaster needs to do with the providers… I’m generally surprised the providers don’t just provide you a high-quality copy of the movie and allow you to encode it to varying levels as needed.

A weird technical question: With a couple years of modern Roku’s, Apple TV’s, Shields and Fire TV 4K’s, is it an option to ask for both h264 and h265 copies of a movie from a provider, and send out a version that’s compatible with the viewer’s device? That could be a great quality/bandwidth tradeoff, and more people will continue to get modern devices that support it, so the numbers should increase over time.

yes hevc encodes will save everyone bandwidth.

Well it all seems to work on my Home Plex media centre (UK). I can’t say I have ever heard of any of the movies but I like the concept. The quality seems pretty good and I suppose you can poke up with the adverts at the start. Does anyone know if you would be able to use this when logged in to your own account away from your home network. I have tried it on my iphone but didn’t show up in the sidebar and is it something we can share with friends.

You need to have the latest Plex app for Apple.
And you may have to pin it to the sidebar yourself. https://support.plex.tv/articles/customizing-the-mobile-apps-2/

There is no need to share it. All your friends with their own plex.tv account will get it automatically.
You can disable it for your ā€˜managed users’, though.

Interesting selection of content. Every video I tried is just 2 channel audio. A bit disappointed at that now that we are almost to a new decade? I’d really like to see more 5.1 audio added.

The larger studios and distributors do provide us massive files… ProRes, where a single feature could be 120-180GB. The quality is fantastic, though it is a huge pain on the logistics side of things (which I get to experience first hand ) when you’re transferring and processing hundreds of them at a time. The smaller distributors either don’t have access to higher quality (from their producers) or aren’t capable of providing it.

We’ll definitely explore H.265 in the future for compatible devices. It certainly makes sense for titles we get in ProRes.

Well I can confirm that, as of my original posting, it was watchable on his account with specific ratings limitations, I.e. not using the generic Plex provided kid, older kid, etc. system. I didn’t even know about this system until I started in this thread, as it didn’t exist when I set up my home server years ago.

There is actually a lot of headliners in the mix.
