Need some additional details.
Plex Media Server version? Available in Authorized Devices.
Platform? Windows/Linux/NAS/etc
Does “plex online” mean the web browser interface?
What is “the application”? Plex for Windows, Plex on a SmartTV, Plex on a mobile phone?
What happens when you try to play an AVI file via plex online? Any error messages, does it start to play but pauses, etc.
Please provide the XML Information for one of the videos that will not play. See Investigate Media Information and Formats for details on how to gather the information. Save the XML information as a .txt file or zip it before attaching it to the thread. The forum does not permit .xml attachments. To attach the file, just drag it into the compose window. It will insert at the current cursor location. You can also use the upload icon (with the upward arrow) to attach the file.
Here’s a guess as to what is happening, but need additional info to confirm.
Web browsers have limited compatibility with video and audio formats.
If the video or audio format in your files are not compatible with the browser, Plex Media Server must transcode the file to a supported format.
If your system is not capable of transcoding, then playback will fail.
Other Plex clients, such as Plex for Windows, are compatible with more video/audio formats. Therefore, they can play the file without it being transcoded by Plex Media Server.
If this is what is happening, there are several possible resolutions. You could convert your videos to a compatible format using Handbrake or similar tools. You could run Plex Media Server on a system capable of transcoding the video. You could avoids playing videos via the web browser interface.
There may be other solutions as well. The additional info is needed to determine how to move forward.
