If that was possible there would have been no need for mp4 files. Sadly avi files are quite obsolete in term of internet streamin g capabilities. Even wmv files have better streaming capabilities.
Plex do allow to play avi files on ant device but through transcoding. It's the direct play that is in question for most client like apple or android devices. Direct play is not possible for avi on most of the handheld (and your Xbox I gather) devices but work well for PHT.
I'm no expert either, that is just my basic understanding of the problem. And with the html5 well on the way H264 and H265 will get more support than avi files "no one" (some still do, but a dwindling minority) use anymore to encode anything.
I remember AVI files, they were the standard at one time years ago. What I remember most is how terrible that codec looked compared to other formats such as x264 and a much smaller size. I have deleted thousands of them over the years I bet. Especially the standard definition AVI files it made shows look old. I cringe even thinking about them past years lol.
Why not? It's the same exact file. You're just changing the container type. I changed all mine to mp4 and they play perfect with Plex on all devices and on the Xbox One.

Lol changing the extension doesn't change what it's encoded as, it's still an AVI file masking itself as an MP4. It may work with Plex (transcoding) but I can guarantee you it won't work with everything because it's still an avi file regardless of what you rename the extension as. To be an MP4 it will need to be re-converted for playing on non plex devices. You can pour your corn flakes into a frosted flakes box but at the end of the day there still just corn flakes lol
Not true at all. You can change the file extension name back and forth as many times as you want and it will still run in non plex software like windows media player for instance. That's exactly why it works. A h264 file will work no matter what the extension. avi or mp4. No need for conversion. mkv is a different story though.

I understand that you believe that you change container by changing the extension. But please realize that you are in the wrong forum to spread disinformation about this. I am also starting to believe that you are not interested in being proven otherwise, so I will not try to spend time arguing with someone that likely is a troll.

Weren't you saying over in another thread that your mp4 files were all playing jittery on Xbox One?
(Note - I'm not trying to start something here, nor am I trying to be clever...I'm genuinely asking if there could be a connection, as I have a lot of avi files archived into a corner of my server)
