Awful quality streaming on apple tv whereas ok on laptop

Do you want me to show the full sequence, beginning to end of one of my pieces of media so you can compare?

Yes I’d like that but I guess you already have a hint ?
I can’t figure it out by looking at your screen unfortunately.

Let me go through the important app settings. This is where folks usually get it wrong.

  1. Use Enhanced Player = ON

  2. Video Quality:
    a. Auto Adjust Quality = OFF
    b. Home Streaming = Maxmimum
    c. Remote Streaming = Maximum (I never take the unit out of the house so N/A)

  3. Advanced:
    a. Allow Direct Play: ON
    b. Multi-Channel Audio Boost = None (My Onkyo does the work)
    c. Display Type; SDR (this is a 1080p screen so will be SDR)

  4. Subtitles:
    a. Burn Subtitles: Automatic
    b. Subtitle Vertical Position: Bottom

  5. Debugging:
    a. Show Enhanced Video Player Debug: OFF (or ON) as needed
    b. Verbose logging: OFF
    c. Enable Log Download: OFF (unless I need to pull the logs)

Only available to Plex Pass users unfortunately.

Hi again,
Thanks @ChuckPa
/unfortunately I don’t have have plex pass, but anyway I can’t find :

c. Display Type; SDR (this is a 1080p screen so will be SDR)
b. Subtitle Vertical Position: Bottom

although I upgraded to the latest 2.15 version on tvOS. Which version are you running?
Still no luck on my side… Do you think it would work better with an AppleTv4K ?

You need the Plex Pass to enable the advanced player features.

Without it, you need to curate your media yourself

Regarding the bit rates (Maximum) , you can still do this in the regular player.
This is quintessential to picture quality. 2 Mbps @ 1080p is (forgive me) utter CRAP

Match my settings as best you can.

I have version 2.14

In the absence of a Plex Pass, we need to make certain of your server streaming settings and your actual LAN configuration.

Set those to maximum as well / unlimited for LAN usage.

If you have questions, Please provide more detail / logs of a captured playback start session so we can see what PMS is deciding to do in light of this information

FWIW, I too am now having an issue with ATV. Latest non-4K.

For no reason whatsoever, it’s transcoding down to 720. It’s a flat network. All the settings on the server side are as they should be. Same with the ATV which has not changed since it’s installation. Plex settings too are fine. I’m being lazy here and just posting the debug screenshot. I will get logs later.

Also, in the playback settings as shown, it will default to what you see selected and I cannot select anything else. No idea what happened here.

Can I be lazy and ask how low the source bitrate is? What’s the converted to rate?
(it looks like a crap 1.4 Mbps video stream)

I’m willing to bet that converting to 720p is the problem (720p does have a low default)

These are straight blu ray rips. Agree the problem results in a junk image. It is set for direct play so no idea why it’s happening all of a sudden. I’m not trying to convert.

So I have no idea what happened, but I rebooted the PMS VM and everything went back to normal. It turns out I was having other non-PMS related issues with that VM so it’s probable that whatever it was had affected this as well. Just odd that it half worked.

still no luck I tried resetting everything again without luck.
I found this post : https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/csl0dq/apple_tv_plex_320p_issue/ seems to be related to my issue.
@ChuckPa I have already sent out the logs is there something else you need?
Tried again from my laptop as a client and it works like a charm so no issue on my NAS, network seems ok as well.
Thanks

@peteralaoui

Please forgive me. Do I have your logs in PM or did you post them elsewhere?

They are the top of this conversation with the first posts.

Thanks!

What is this being played on? A full sized TV? How big?

I am having a similar issue that just cropped up over the last week or so. Only having playback issues on Apple TV (all three of them). Playback on windows 10 laptop and ios on ipad are fine. Its also only happening to older blu ray rips. Newer ones (last few months) work fine on Apple TV. I update some DVD Fab settings on occasion over time so whatever change I made a few months ago is allowing the newest files (mp4s) to play ok on the apple tv but the vast majority of files are buffering. I updated to the newest version today and that didn’t fix the problem. Switching to ā€œconvert automaticallyā€ fixes it but displays a much lower resolution than it should, than it used to and whats desired.

The Apple TV settings are the same as Chuck PA mentions in this post

Attaching the logs. Thanks for any advice and hope everyone is staying safe

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-04-04_13-02-52.zip (3.3 MB)

To provide a comparison, here is my AppleTV 4k after running for 13 continuous hours (and still playing as I write this). I’m watching for a memory leak.

There are no quality issues. I am using the enhanced player (Plex Pass).

Please note how smoothly my network behaves.
Also note that , even after 13 hours of non-stop playback, now part way into the 11th item, with only 80 dropped frames. This is normal behavior to have a possible dropped frame or two (less than 1/12 of a second) at the beginning and end of a movie during resolution switching.

The spot in the middle is my desk lamp reflection
This is one of my lowest quality files. I ā€˜got it’ somewhere.

appreciated Chuck - but how can i return to getting the same performance? Anything in the logs that suggest a problem?
