Backing up Plex Media Server to rar or zip file

Server Version#: Latest
Player Version#:Latest

On a Win 10 system I went to %localappdata% after unchecking empty trash

Winrar works fine until 39% of the compression when an error pops up saying could not continu e because plex update service is still running.

Winrar still continues compressing though

I need this to be perfect; can I disable that update service ? I have tried with and without Plex running in background.

Now too, I can copy the folder itself to another hard drive ( over 800,000 files) with no issue.

Does one HAVE to compress or is copying the folder and the reg file the safest path?

Much obliged

Jeff

There’s two benefits to creating an archive file from your server data directory:

  1. Moving the data directory is a lot of data… a compressed archive means less data to be transferred
  2. Transferring many individual files causes more overhead in the network traffic – transferring a single large file is more efficient.

No matter if you transfer an archive or the folder itself – make sure your Plex Media Server isn’t running when creating the archive or transferring the directory (otherwise your server will keep writing / changing data and you might end up with a corrupted backup that can no longer be restored!!)

As for the update service… if that keeps running, simply end the app/process using the Windows task manager.
