I have a large(?) media library … 12K+ albums, 4k movies and around 500 series … I started a zip of the Plex Media Server directory excluding Cache directory. But it is taking over a day and a half and it is still going. Is there anything that can be done to speed this up? Is this normal? Thoughts …
Thats not a simple question. The backup software I use does a full backup in a matter of a couple hours. Are you doing the zip from the same computer? what program are you using to zip? what compression settings are you using? what is the overall size of that directory? are you trying to save that zip on the same computer or a remote share? what does the overall disk activity look like for both the source and destination drives?
I can run a full PC backup (140GB OS drive) in about 3 hours over a wired network.
thanks for the answers and questions. Not sure of the zip program as it is part of the filemanager I use. I am doing a zip from c to d. Currently the zip file is at 3.6 gig and it appears to be slowing down. Both drives are being very little traffic on them. The PMS directory is 34gig +
what backup sw do you use?
I use Veeam https://www.veeam.com/ allows for daily incremental backups and weekly full backups. (allows whats is called a bare metal backup) in case of failure you can recover to a new hard drive in a matter of a couple hours. I normally keep backups for about 4-6 weeks and has allowed me to recover Plex several times from database corruption due to improper system system shut downs.
You can perform single file, directory, or entire PC recovery depending on what you need and is fairly idiot proof.
I suspect you are on windows and are using the integrated zip support. Ziping files is great for compression, but when you are handling thousands of small files and the main goal is backup, its not the best solution. A simple copy/paste or robocopy would probably suite you better. I suspect that while zipping its trying to keep a good compression rate, and is killing the overall speed due to the factors above.
i think you are right … will look at other options. Thanks

Try HandyBackup, I have been using it for years and is great for things like this with 1000’s of files and incremental backups.
Thanks … HandyBackup looks promising …
Use rsync, zipping a gazillion files will take ages.
