Backing up PMS on Qnap

Server Version#:1.27.2
Player Version#: Qnap TVS-672XT
I am trying to figure out how to back up my Plex Media Server settings and Metadata. I have read documents and threads in the forums and cannot figure out how to back anything up. Please help.

On all QNAP systems, PMS supports a special shared folder name, PlexData, to access into the QPKG area using FileStation.

Here’s the FAQ about it.

Please don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Thank you fo rat reply. Unfortunately I cannot find the PlexData folder anywhere. Do you know how I can I find it?

You create it. Plex doesn’t do it for you.

  1. Shared Folders - Create the shared folder, spelled exactly PlexData (capitals important)

  2. Restart PMS

  3. Now you will see it in FileStation.

  4. In PlexData you will now see Plex Media Server

  5. Click into it.

  6. You’ll now see all your PMS internal data files.

  7. With PMS STOPPED,

  8. Highlight all the files and , right-click, Compress to tar.gz or ZIP file (your preference). (( tar.gz is better on Linux ))

Great! That worked perfectly, thank you so much.

I have my media folders backing up weekly to another NAS (Qnap TR-004) automatically using HBS3. Can I set it up to backup this folder as well?

You can backup your media folders independent of PMS.

PMS only reads the media files so you can have media backed up concurrent with PMS running and serving.

Perfect! Thank you for all of your help.

I missed this when I responded.

QNAP backup won’t follow the link in PlexData.

QNAP stores applications in a hidden area. That’s why I had to create the special linkage when PMS starts.

Unfortunately, you can only backup PMS manually – AND – when it’s stopped.

No problem. I will back it up through the process that you showed me earlier. Thank you for making it easier to back up the PMS data, it is greatly appreciated.
