Hi,
I’m currently running my Plex Server on a Synology.
I recently had an issue that corrupted my database and I had to rebuild all of my libraries, artwork, descriptions etc. Having spent a long time doing this I was pretty annoyed. Before I commit to spending that time again, I want to firstly know if I can, then if so execute, a backup of the Plex Server folder on to my Mac. The server sits on its own volume on the Synology, so I effectively want to copy the whole volume. The actual media files are on a separate volume and I’ve got these all backed up already. I take a copy when I transfer it to the Synology.
I think it should be possible, but I’m not sure. Maybe using rsync (I’ve never used this, but think it makes sense what it does). To start with though, I’ve tried copying it manually. Everything has copied fine except the metadata folder. When I try this, I get a message saying I don’t have permission. I’m assuming this is something Plex is doing as I’ve set my user profile on the Synology to have read/write access to the shared volume.
I know in settings I can get Plex to back up the server already, but that just puts the backup on the Synology too. The reason for wanting to transfer it to my Mac, is that the folder would then be covered by Time Machine, effectively meaning I could go back to the working data base to get back up and running.
So, a couple of questions, if anyone can help.
- Is there some special setting on the metadata folder meaning I can’t copy it? If so can I get round this?
If I can’t get around this, I assume I can’t back up at all, so the next questions are moot. - Do you know if rsync would work? If so, would anyone who’s doing this, or knows how be able to provide any guidance on the command please?
Many thanks
