Obviously I have corrected this in my own library (well, re-corrected it, it was correct in my library until I was forced to cut over to the modern plex agent/scraper) but it’d be nice to correct it in Plex as well. I assume whatever upstream metadata provider you’re using instead of TheMovieDB is inexplicably picking up on a DVD release or something.
I just want to observe that this is the, I think, 7th or 8th metadata related thread I’ve created with no response from Plex, which is so very dispiriting. I think the thing that irritates me is that under the old agent, if there was an error with TheMovieDB data, I’d just… go and fix the error myself, and then I’d know not only that my Plex database would be correct, but that everyone else on earth with the same film would benefit from the fix. But I can no longer do this, so this is the only reporting pathway I have.
This has to do with the release dates the movie has on IMDB:
I don’t remember the logic behind it but if there is not theatrical release date I believe it is, then the release date it picks seems random.
Regarding the rest of your post, Plex now uses a consolidated metadata DB that they populate based on info from TVDB and TMDB (for series) and IMDB (and possibly) TMDB for movies.
You are still able to correct the data in the respective metadata providers and then normally give it 48-72 hours and those changes should propagate to Plex’s metadata.
There are users here that make corrections all the time based on things that other users post on the forum (like incorrect TVDB IDs in TMDB or vice versa).
Right, I am aware that Plex stopped using individual upstream metadata directly and instead now uses an opaque mix of providers, leading to hard to fix issues. If the source issue here is that IMDB (one provider of many) has 9 release dates, all of which are theatrical, and Plex randomly picks the 7th of 9, then that’s an error and it should be corrected.
All of the errors I have reported are errors that are unique to Plex, not errors from upstream metadata providers that are publicly accessible. I have something like 2,000 TMDB contributions and a few hundred to TheTVDB. I would not be reporting things here if I could correct them myself, I have zero interest in screaming into the void.
Balance has a correct release date in every single upstream source. The error is unique to Plex.
