Best format to convert to from DVD

Hello,

So I am in the process of starting to digitize my collection in Plex and I am about 80 movies in. I am currently using MacX DVD Ripper Pro, which seems to work just fine. However, I was wondering what would be the best/recommended setting for conversion? What file format (I am currently using mp4) and what resolution, do I crop the ripping process to remove the black bars? There are some additional settings regarding ‘High Quality’ and fun stuff.

I am not at all worried about space, just the best quality.

Thanks!

Here’s my bulletproof guide for Handbrake:

I use MP4 files (no embedded title fields). If you don’t need high end audio an MP4 file is just dandy. Handbrake also does MKV files in case you want to up your audio game at some point. The guide works for either file type.

The guide will take you up to the point where you need your eyeballs to determine bit rates, but for DVDs I can tell you any more than about 3500Kbps is a waste of time.
