Sorry for the newbie quetion, guys. I’m planning a move abroad and would like to MOVE my 1TB of legally ripped movies SOMEWHERE (Google Drive, s3, etc.) so I can play them on Plex WITHOUT lugging a dedicated hard drive around.
1/Is this possible?
2/Is there a storage option you’d recommend? (Dropbox is a no-go because of the 10gb upload limit.)
I’d prefer not to lug my files around. Is there an integration tool you’d recommend – like Gdrive, etc. – that would let me upload my files, stream 'em to plex but not keep them locally?
Plex - by design - is a server/client relationship. You are intended to leave the files on a server somewhere stationary, then stream the files over the network or internet to a client device anywhere in the world. If you have internet at any location, you should be able to retrieve your media files using a Plex client. The bonus with Plex, is that it can also on-the-fly transcode the files into a size or shape that is able to be played on whatever device you watch it on. No need to create a separate 480p version of a video for your phone, while keeping a main copy of the file in 4K video.
Since you expressed a wish to store the files on a cloud server to prevent carrying them with you, this suggests you are expecting an internet connection wherever you travel and want to play the files remotely that way.
This is why banzaiInsitute asked for more info. The normal use of Plex is you never need to haul your media files around with you, like you would do with Kodi. So it’d help us to work out a solution for you that would only require a stationary powered-on server at a location (your home?), while you carry around a small client video player for TV’s, or just use your phone.
If you insist on using a cloud service to store this media anyway, then maybe someone knows, but that will cost money, which should not be necessary for Plex.
As others have said there is never a scenario where you will need to carry a hard drive around.
Connected to your Plex Media Server the files will be available from anywhere when set up correctly.
If however you do want to use cloud storage then many of us do use Google drive without issue.
You will still need to run PMS locally and then use some kind of tool to mount that Google Drive to your local PMS. (Such tools include RaiDrive, Rclone etc…) The options available will depend on the OS that PMS is running on.) Windows, Mac, Linux etc…
