Best place to store my media? NAS or is cloud an option yet?

Long time PLEX user but my Drobo is dead and now looking for best, most reliable media storage options. I’m a Plex Pass user and remember an effort to go CLOUD a few years ago that was short lived. Is anyone doing that again and does it work? Best NAS or cloud options is appreciated. I use Roku for Plex and Mac for the software. Thanks.

Many of us have been using Google unlimited storage for many years.
Now may not be the best time to look at that particular option though. Rumours persist on how Google may change their unlimited offering in the next few months.

Whilst it exists though it does work very well.

I’m using a Synology DS 920+ with 32 TB of storage, and it’s worked out great for me. I used to even have the server itself on the NAS, but the CPU is a bit weak for that, so I offloaded the server onto another box. The media is still stored on it though.

I like my data local. If your loose your Internet then your out of luck. Also as stated, you never know when the storage provider decides to change things putting you in a bind trying to figure out what to do with your data.

Thanks for your response-- But I seem to recall that even if your media is local, Plex required an internet connection to verify the account before playing media. Has this been changed? THX

It is and always was the case that Plex odes NOT require an internet connection to work correctly. All you must do is allow insecure connections on the local network and use the local Plex IP instead of “Plex.tv” to get connected. I have never lost the use of my Plex even when, as I often do, I lose internet connection for a while.
I do not know why this issue keeps popping up but it was false and it is false and, except for when there is a bug, will remain false.

Well, by DEFAULT it requires an internet connection to verify your account information. But a few tweaks here and there in the client and server, and you can completely disable the online account check while still maintaining security (IP-based access). You can then disconnect your router and still be able to access the Plex server on your internal network just fine from then on.

Keep in mind, Elijah-Baley, that most clients do not allow connection via IP. I can only think that the browser can do that.
