Best Player for MKV

Good Morning Everyone,

Okay. I am scouring sites trying to figure out the best player for my MKV files.

My PC running PLEX server is a gaming PC, an Intel i7 6770k, 32GB ram, GTX980ti, running the server off an SSD with the library on a HDD.

I can stream just fine to my wireless phones and tablets, and to my Samsung 4k Blu Ray Player…
But the PLEX APP on my Vizio 4k TV runs very slowly when opening up, and it freezes when trying to play media. I am reading that this has to do with the MKV files, and vizio app sucks anyway.

I like the MKV file type, I have plenty of space on the computer for the file sizes, I don’t want to lose quality.

My question is what is the best player that can handle Blu Ray MKV and run PLEX smoothly? Roku player, Amazon Fire TV?

Opinions?

Thanks all.

Nvidia shield tv

Stay away from the Tivo Bolt–it doesn’t handle large MKVs well at all

VLC is a good player that plays back MKVs well. It just doesn’t have all the bells and whistles Plex has.

For a dedicated hardware device that you can download a Plex app on (and maybe still have Amazon & Netflix) and get access in a matter of minutes after opening the box it’s going to be tough to do better than a Shield TV.

If it’s for you in house and you’re a bit tech savvy there are some roll your own clients that would be just as good as well such as a NUC and embedded PMP.
