Best Settings for handbrake Blu-ray

Ok so i need some help… I am trying to get the small file size along with respectable bitrate so i dont lose quality. I was using h.265 but was compressing file size too much where my bitrate ended up being 2500…which for bluray quality is unacceptable… Plus h.265 is too much for my old pc, i have gone back ro h.264, which i have had better results with Bitrate.but wanna get that size down…tips…advice. Anything would help!

Thanks

You are asking for the impossible.
High bitrate = big file size

Some hints:

  1. don’t compress 4k video with H.264
  2. use “constant quality”, set to RF 20
  3. don’t go above the level setting 4.0
This will cap the bandwidth at 25 mbps which is good for older/weaker players and prevents the files from becoming too big
  4. hands off the advanced encoder options (those, which are no longer visible by default in Handbrake)
  5. if you want an efficient encoding, give the encoder time to test different strategies. This is the “speed” setting. Set it to slow or slowest.
  6. highest quality or highest encoding efficiency is only achievable with software encoding. Don’t use the Quicksync, nVidia or other “hardware encoders”. Yes, it takes longer.

Consider the above as a starting point for own experiments.

The Handbrake HQ 1080p30 Surround preset will conveniently set options 2-6 to @OttoKerner’s suggestions.

It’s a great starting point.
