Best VPN set-up options assistance & ideas

Good day, to all,

I am thinking of adding a VPN to my full set up here at home for more peace of mind and security.

My current set-up is as follows:

  • Master Modem from ISP - Wifi turned off and where all my port forwarding are added - unfortunately there is no VPN option in this modem.
  • Amplifi Modem - connected as bridge to the master modem for most my wifi and wired needs as this little box is excellent.

After a few research here on Plex forums and other google sources - I am now a little more confused how best to do this - software or hardware VPN - “or both”

The idea is to add a VPN between my master modem and everything else.

My main plex server is on my desktop PC connected directly to the master modem
All my other devices wifi are from the Amplifi and Shield - TV - AMP etc are hardwired to the Amplifi too.

If i was going the hardware route - adding a physical VPN modem connected to my master modem - where then my plex server desktop PC will connect to the “new” VPN modem as well as the bridged Amplifi… Would this be an easy and safe set up to start with?

The questions that seem to be mentioned a lot is that will my remote service on plex still work behind a VPN modem and will friends/family still be able to connect to me?

Yes, the inconvenience is that i need an additional modem, one more free plug - however ready to do this if needed unless the “new” VPN modem is better than my current wifi on the Amplifi. Also the reason I am avoiding software is that this need to be installed on all devices, so rather have a network where it all starts from the VPN if that makes sense.

I looked at liberty shield modems but ruled them out due to the limited speed through put at max 70mbits on tests.

I also seen modems that could replace my Amplifi where i can add for eg PureVPN or other services within the modems and they would have gigabit throughput.

Has anyone here have a similar setup than the one i may be thinking of and had success using VPN with Plex and all other devices seamlessly?

Please feel free to comment on your set up if all is working and how you have setup VPN for yourselves with what you use, equipment added and what was the best for you so that I can identify how to do this and what to buy or not.

All help would be much appreciated for this, thank you in advance.

Ben

Thanks Michael, i actually read this link and most of the reddit links about this. Many confusing info on this rather than a guide.
A lot of people talk about VM machines & Dockers which is way over my knowledge, I am trying to find a “plug and play” option - for eg hardware set up which is the VPN for everything.
At the moment it seems pureVPV has more options with a static IP etc but still does not help me what to buy and get and how to set it up so was hoping someone here in the Plex community could share a working set up they may have similar to how I would like to set it up…

Thanks

Ben

It was useful thanks really - but more confused now lol
Hopefully some will answer and i will do more research - maybe contacting purevpn direct too to see what they recommend.

I have a working Plex server behind an openvpn router. See this post for details: Working VPN Setup using Dynamic DNS Addresses

Thanks - seems to be the same thing that i wish to create at home - thank you so much - lets start playing…
