Blacked out items in Timeline view, but ok in Library view

In the timeline view, the oldest pictures are simply black boxes, no pictures. I can’t click on them or do anything. What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Confirmed the folder location for the library is valid
  2. Scanned the library files a couple of times with no change (scanning runs only for a few seconds, which seems too fast)
  3. Refreshed meta data
  4. Emptied trash

There was an identical thread by @Hende101 which had no replies, and was closed. However the problem persists.
