I have been having issues with Plex for the last few weeks and I can’t get to the bottom of it. I don’t know if it’s my network, my plex server or quite what it is.
I run Plex Server on an Intel NUC which I’ve been using for the last few years and it’s been absolutely great but for some reason now It’s having a real issue with playing films. (oddly, items in my TV library have been seemingly playing ok)
It keep getting huge amounts of buffering which make film watching impossible, and often the player (on either device will just hang on a black screen for an age before dropping back to the plex library. If I try to play the same film again the screen will just go blank and nothing happens.
It’s driving me mad because I haven’t really changed anything on my network and the NUC and my Plex setup has been working brilliantly for a few years now and I have no idea what the issue is.
I’ve attached my server logs from this afternoon which hopefully will show the issue happening.
Your log has some access denied errors, and a specific error (22) with that file:
Sep 29, 2022 17:00:23.881 [2036] ERROR - An error occurred reading the file: \\OPENMEDIAVAULT\Movies\Spider-Man Homecoming (2017)\Spider-Man Homecoming (2017) WEBDL-1080p.mkv (22).
I don’t know what an error 22 means, but I’d start by resetting permissions to their correct values on all files and folders that PMS uses because of access denied.
It’s worth mentioning that you’ll want to upgrade to 1.29.1.xxxx, as there have been massive changes to the transcoder. If you upgrade and have a large library, let it rest for an hour. After you’re convinced PMS is idle, restart it and wait another 5min, then demonstrate the issue and troubleshooting download logs.
I think part of the problem is a dying hard drive in my file server. I did some testing and it allows me to see the content of the drive but if I try to play anything from it or copy anything from it, it will read the file for a short while then grinds to a halt and locks up explorer.
The file I was trying to play that showed up in the log was on that drive! So I’m guessing the error might have something to do with that as it tried to play then failed, and then couldn’t be accessed. I’ve no removed that drive from the library and rescanned, and trashed anything in the library that was on the dead drive.
However, with files on a drive which is definitely ok I’m still getting the same issues, lots of buffering.
How do I upgrade to 1.29.1?? Plex tells me I’m on the latest version when I check for updates.
