Internet upload bandwidth is 10 megabits/second but I normally get around 12.
My brother trying to stream has 100 megabits download and gets that on his roku tv where hes trying to stream.
For some reason, his player shows that its loading ahead, but will still buffer constantly.
The server doesnt break a sweat on the cpu transcoding and my internet is being used by nothing other than the server. Task manager shows it uploading with plenty of speed for my low bitrate movie.
I feel its also important to add that a vpn fixes the issue but you can’t exactly use a vpn on a roku tv.
Im not sure what could cause this issue or where to start looking. Any thoughts?
What is the distance between the two of you? Any borders/oceans/etc? If you’re in London and he’s in Hong Kong, well …
What is the resolution & bandwidth of the movie? You can view with More Info in Plex Web.
What are PMS settings for Internet Upload Speed and Limit Remote Stream Bandwidth in Settings -> Remote Access?
Set Internet Upload Speed to 10 Mbps. Then try varying the value of Limit Remote Stream Bandwidth. See if you can find a setting that permits streaming w/o buffering. Start with 8 Mbps & decrease if things still buffer.
Also, try streaming from another remote location if possible. Ex: Disable wi-fi on your phone & see if you can stream over the mobile network. Try from a local coffee shop, etc. Basically, get more than one data-point. If you can’t stream from anywhere, then might be something on your end. If others can stream OK, but your brother can’t, then points to something on his end.
we’re both in the US. I’m on the east coast and hes in the Midwest. About 2,000 miles. we’ve both pinged each other and there’s about ~150ms latency. no packet loss. using the tracert command shows 18 hops. not entirely sure how relevant these are though.
The movies being watched are no larger than 3Mbps. 720p.
The internet upload speed was set to 10 Mbps and the remote stream bandwidth was set to 4 Mbps already.
I am able to stream from another users internet with no issues. my phone has no trouble on its regular connection and even over a VPN to the other side of the continent in Vancouver playback is smooth.
it does happen on every video. bit rate is about 3Mbps. 720p and h.264 video format. most are acc audio. some ac3. even when direct playing, the problem occurs.
works for other users no problem. I should note those friends are in state and brother is out of state so that may be a problem but the latency is still less than 150ms between us with ample bandwidth.
We don’t have any other plex servers to try. it buffers both on the web player on his laptop, even when wired, getting a full 100Mbps down and on his roku tv.
