[BUG] App crashing after movie ends - Version 6.2.0.719

Having this happen in multiple Plex libraries, multiple random movies, on (2) shield tvs, both running this version of the app. When a movie ends, the app crashes and immediately restarts.

PMS is on Windows, Version 1.7.3.3937

Anyone else experiencing this?

I have submitted feedback via the built in Android method.

Disabling any sort of pre roll clip or trailers (so it’s just the movie, no playlist) seems to delay the crash by a few seconds. I have submitted feedback for this too.

Thanks for the bug report, we can replicate this issue and are working on a fix.

Very cool, thanks @roflharrison

@roflharrison this bug appears to still be present in limited capacity

That is, auto play works for the first episode of a TV show, but after the second episode and after the 10 second countdown, the app will crash. I have sent in a crash report via the Android method.

Interestingly, sometimes the crash screen will pop up but the audio for the new episode plays on.

Additionally, the crash will happen if you wait for the 10 second countdown or click through it.

Same thing happened to me yesterday.

The fix for this will be included in the next beta.

you’re awesome

@roflharrison

I’ve been watching TV each night this week to keep track of this bug and it appears it’s still here in some form

I haven’t been able to pinpoint exact steps to reproduce other than leaving a TV show running through episodes. In this new iteration, the app doesn’t crash outright, it freezes. By repeatedly pressing the back button, I can get an error screen to appear indicating the app is not responding and providing the options to close the app, wait, or send feedback. I have sent feedback via this method. Please let me know if you can find it and if you want me to try to pull logs.

Thanks

@Andrroid thanks for the update.

I’ve tried a few devices (emulators and an up to date SHIELD) and versions of the app and I’m unable to reproduce the issue now . Are these your steps to reproduce?

 1. Play a video in a series
 2. Video Ends
 3. Post play shows and the "Playing Next" counts down
 - Repeat 1 - 3, 3rd video in this process the app freezes?

If so can you let me know the version of the app you have installed?
You are using a SHIELD right?

@roflharrison Those are the correct steps and yes I am using a shield tv (2 actually) and am on version 6.2.0.860

Oh, one thing, I’m not sure it’s the 3rd video. It’s been very inconsistent. I’ll try it with a few different shows tonight. Also it happens after the new episode has started, usually a few seconds in. I’ll record times as well.

I’m also having the same exact issue as Andrroid.

What I can do to reproduce the steps consistently:

  • Select a TV Show
  • Shuffle the entire series
  • Let a few episodes play, and it will eventually completely freeze, sometimes a few seconds into the video, sometimes before the video is shown.
  • I need to double click home and close Plex via the multitasking view to open Plex again.
  • Playing the exact same video file will work fine now.

I’ve tested it with both remote and local servers, same exact freezing issue. Happens with TV shows and movies as well. Just happened to me again with movies, and the exact steps for me were:

  • Open Plex
  • Play a movie (21 Jump Street)
  • Completely finish the movie
  • Go back, and select 22 Jump Street
  • See the first second or so of the video (the Sony logo) and it freezes.
  • Force closed Plex
  • Reopen Plex, watched 22 Jump Street fine.

I did a test using the web UI on a desktop and after about 15 episodes played, no freezes or crashes.

Hopefully we can pinpoint the problem!

@Andrroid / @“Jagandeep Brar” thanks for the further information, could you please provide logs of the freeze/crash point: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201573117-Android-Android-TV-and-Fire-TV-Logs (feel free to PM them to me).

@“Jagandeep Brar” I use the exact same method to force close it as well, restarting the file then works too

will try to get logs tonight or this weekend

This is really hard to pull a log for, as all TV shows/movies I currently have are over 20 minutes, and the logging is only enabled for 20 minutes (I believe). I think I may have pinpointed the issue a little bit further through personal testing though.

Two things that I are almost definitive with the crash:

  1. It rarely (if ever) happens on local servers.
  2. It never happens with the first playing.

I am almost positive it happens when the video buffers, (and the toast appears that when says the server may not be fast enough), and this would explain why it rarely happens with local servers. Buffering typically happens within the first second when I use a remote server, because of the whole PlexDrive+VPS combo (with it fetching it from Google Drive on-the-fly). The toast appears without a problem when on the first video, but a buffer on the second video will NOT even show the toast.

This makes me think that maybe one thing to check is possibly a problem with the context when you play back-to-back videos, as passing a dead context to a toast can cause crashes if I remember correctly from my personal work with Android development.

@“Jagandeep Brar”

agreed on the 20 minutes issue

however, my server is local and I am experiencing the issue so that theory is out

also, I never get a toast; it just freezes

devs just need to sit down and watch a show that has 20 minute episodes

I am just going to continue to submit android feedback every time it happens
