AppleTV app crashes every few minutes with experimental player enabled

Works fine with the experimental player off.

Should be a few crashes in the log.

Unfortunately crashes don’t show much relevant info in logs alone  Could you please make sure you enabled Send Crash Reports in Settings → Privacy? Once you have done that, please reproduce the issue again.

Also, have you tried if it happens with the experimental player on and Direct Play off?

Does it happen with any file you’ve tested or only with some specific ones?

Thanks!

Send crash reports is on. Not sure how much user data you can see in them to see they are from specific user.
It happens on almost all movies and series.

ATM I’ve disabled experimental player since my spouse is threatening my livelihood.
I’ll play around with it on my day off and generate some crash reports for you guys.

Thanks a lot for the help! If you have an iOS device (iPhone/iPad), I’d be curious to know if you can reproduce the crash there, since it’s easier to extract crash reports from them.

I’m having the exact same issue here:

Same issue, but only for HD(720p/1080p) movies. When viewing TV-show episodes in non-HD it works.

Just reporting same problem here. Plex crashing on 3 different Apple TVs in my house. Turned experimental player off and all 3 back to streaming fine. Tested using Direct Play 1080p movies

Haven’t been using Plex much last few days, however I’ve played some TV episodes and movies just to test the new player, and it seems if I open the slide down menu, and navigate a bit there, and trigger it closing, the player crashes every time.

I wanted to add I’ve been having the same issue. I turned off Direct play however and it didn’t crash again. Before it was doing it every 5 minutes or so.

Same issue here… when watching a 1080 hd file, Plex closes every 5 mins… (the Apple TV itself doesn’t crash… and I don’t think plex crashes, because all that happens is that plex closes and then it takes me to the Apple TV home screen, after which I can open plex and it picks up where I left off).

When watching a sd file, it’s fine… no crashes (the sd file is a tv show and the 1080hd file is a movie… don’t know if that has anything to do with anything).

When I run off the ‘enhanced player’ from the settings menu, no more crashes…

It sounds like this could be related to specific files/codecs  I use it every night and have never seen a crash personally. If you’re running into the issue and can reproduce with a specific file, please provide a sample of the file so we can reproduce. Many thanks!

This is happening to me as well (both on iPhone/iPad and Apple TV). Playback usually works fine for about 2 minutes and then the entire iOS app crashes. Displaying the experimental player fixes it and I get no further crashes.

I should mention my server is a Drobo 5N, which has both a weak CPU and low amount of memory (not sure if this would make a difference). I am using Direct Play however.

Attached are crash logs from my iPhone:

If it can help, I also experiment quite some crashes on my AppleTV 4K with the new experimental player. All my files are m4v container with stereo AAC audio or 5.1 AC3 and MOV_TEXT French UTF-8 subtitles.

Best,

Same problem: 4K h264. Old Player in direct mode is ok. Same on iPhone.

I’m having the same issue, after 1 min or so the ATV app crashes, I will check if I have the “Send Crash Reports” enabled and reproduce it. Anyways I will also try to disable the experimental player to see if this fixes the issue. Mi movie and series files are in mp4 format.

Seeing the same problem on a few files. Mostly standard 1080p mkv encodings using h264 and AC3 audio.

I have anApple TV 4K, using the Match Frame Rate option. Not sure if that can be related.

Files that crash, crash after 30sec or so, most files (inc. 4k Movies) play fine.

I’ve pinged the team about this thread.

Is it an immediate crash or do you see the video/app freeze for a few seconds and then it crashes?

Immediate crash. Video plays fine for a few seconds and then it crashes to home screen.

This bug is also present on ios app. Plays fine for a few seconds then crashes
