BUG: Artist / Band names not showing up next to tracks

Server Version#: 1.28.1.6018
Player Version#: 4.87.2

Hey guys,
I’ve noticed that artist / band names don’t show up next to tracks anymore. But sometimes they do. It might be that they show up when an album etc isn’t matched?

I popped this in my collection last week and it’s been matched but AC/DC doesn’t appear next to the song titles and in the info for each track the artist section is blank. My metadata for artist / band isn’t blank though. Examples below.

Another example of this is an album I added a few weeks back, it’s not been matched but it shows the artist and guests etc. Like Plex used to do.

Can someone explain why this is happening? I like having the names next to the tracks or at least have the option to turn it on or off.

The artist name will only appear next to tracks if the track artist differs from the album artist.

Looking at your example this seems to be working correctly.

AC/DC is the same for the album artist as it is for the track artists.
Jonah Matranga doesn’t match any of the track artists so they show next to the track titles.

Oh, so it’s a new’ish thing. When was this implemented then?

Names still show up underneath the tracks on Plexamp though, is that correct? It seems to vary to be honest. I did a full refresh the other day, but it’s odd that appears on some stuff and not others. Is there something I need to do my side?

No, looking at the history this was implemented about 3 years ago.

Just give me some examples, I’m not sure what you mean exactly.

There was a little quirk in the music scanner and m4a files until just recently (probably the newest scanner corrected the problem) With the previous scanner/agent the artist name would show up even when the track artist and album artist were identical. The “bug” only seemed to affect m4a files, all other file types were displayed as @drzoidberg33 describes, with track artist showing only when it was different from the album artist.

Oh, haha. I never knew this. As @leelynds said it seems to be something regarding m4a files and 99% of my collection is m4a. Ok, thanks for confirming that.

As for Plexamp. I’ve noticed that band / artists names show up on some of the albums on Plexamp but not on the browser version. Examples below

But on that AC/DC I mentioned earlier that matches on Plexamp. So it’s like the info hasn’t synchronised?

Have you tried clearing the cache in plexamp? I’d guess its cached locally on the device with the older metadata.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see the same thing. Seems to be related to artist / complications for me as I don’t see this with plexamp at the album level, but only complications for an artist.

Ah ok, so it could just be something that needs updating in Plexamp?

Oh thanks! If I had to guess this is PlexAmp showing the artist title on each track if any of the tracks have a different track artist. I could be wrong but I will confirm.

It’s kinda like browser version then, in the way that if an album has a track / tracks when there’s additional artists it shows them all instead of the just the ones affected?
