[Bug] Deleting photos breaks Timeline

There are already several reports with some details in the announcement thread.
My experience is with PMS version 1.5.6.3790 on a Synology DS216j NAS, used via Web App on Firefox 53.0.3.

If a Photo library was created and some photos deleted afterwards, it breaks the Timeline functionality.
This manifests in several ways:

  • let’s say I have 30 photos - that means I have 30 “slots” filled with 30 “images”. After I delete 10 photos, there are still 30 “slots”, but only the newest 20 “slots” are occupied with “images”; the oldest 10 “slots” are now black without any thumbnail. So deleting the photos will keep the photo containers and will just “move” the remaining thumbnails to fill the “most recent” containers. At the “least recent” end of the timeline there are frames without thumbnail that cannot be clicked.
  • photos from a single date are sometimes split over two following dates because of the previous issue
  • photos shot during a single day are split over two entries, both of which are from a single day (so I have a “timeline” from June 12 with 6 photos and then another “timeline” from June 12 with 4 other photos)
Scanning library files doesn’t fix the issue. Some users reported that deleting the library and recreating it helps, but that workaround usability decreases with the size of the photo library.

Devs, if you could use any screenshots, logs or more detailed descriptions, let us know.

Installing 1.7.4 didn’t help at first, and scan of library and refresh of metadata were fruitless, but after I added and moved around some photos yesterday, today I can see that the Timeline is how it should be! This is great, Plex team, thank you!
