[BUG] Disappearing subtitles on Android

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 10.4.0.4843 on Android 13 (Samsung Note 20 Ultra with OneUI 5.1)
(Player or server version doesn’t seem to matter. It’s been happening for a few months, actually. Can’t recall exactly)

So, the symptoms are simple.
If I pause during playback, and turn the screen off, and then wake the phone up and resume playback, the subtitles vanish. Changing the subtitle track doesn’t help. I have to close the playback (don’t have to close the player), and then start it again. This happens randomly, with no consistent circumstances, other than turning the screen off.

  1. Doesn’t matter if it’s direct play or transcoded. Although, it seems to be more frequent when it’s transcoded.
  2. Doesn’t matter if the subtitles are PGS or SRT. And yes, the subtitle tracks are muxed in.
  3. Doesn’t matter if it’s local, or remote stream. Although, it seems to be more frequent when remote.

Who cares about bugs, right? “Streaming Is Believing” :man_facepalming:.

Apologies for the delayed response. I actually filed a bug for this a few months ago and yes it hasn’t been solved yet. It happens when turning off the screen or moving focus away from the app. I will try increase the priority of the issue as I think it was low. Can you try something for me as this is what I do if you start playback and the subtitles are not displaying hit the rewind back 10 seconds button that usually displays the subs again. A better way of doing this would be if you go into settings > Player Experience and then set “Rewind Video on Resume” to 1 second or higher, this should solve the issue.

Hi, @morganj

Yes, this workaround does appear to achieve the desired effect.
But I wouldn’t count it as a solution.

PS: Are you only dealing with Android stuff, or can I get your attention on a desktop player issue?

I’m experiencing the same issue; however, rewinding back 10 seconds doesn’t resolve it. I find myself having to close the playback and resume again, which is very annoying.
