BUG: Music Settings: Not respecting Use Local Tags

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: N/A

With the newer versions, a setting in Music Library was added to use local tags:

Prefer local metadata

When scanning this library, prefer embedded tags and local files if present.

This is not being respected. I have all my musical cast (Broadway and Off Broadway) albums set as Broadway Cast as the Artist in the tags. I use MusicBrainz Picard when saving my music. But in Plex, it is listing the artist as SoundTrack. I use SoundTrack for all Movie albums and true Soundtracks.

You must use the ‘Album Artist’ metatag, not just the normal ‘Artist’.

Yes. As you can see by the screen capture, I am.

But PLEX still puts the Album as Soundtrack.

Did you perform ‘Fix Match’ on the Album level after adding it into the library?
I assume you have now other albums under the “Artist” ‘Soundtrack’ now?
Do these albums all have proper ‘Album Artist’ metatags set?

What happens if you manually edit the album and change the album artist to your desired ‘Broadway Cast’?

Just tried Fix again (have done it before) and it still keeps it in Soundtrack. Any new added I cannot “Fix Match” as the only thing available is “Match”. If I do Match, it still selects Soundtrack.

I have over 50 albums that are in a drive folder called Broadway Cast. All 50 were in an Artist/Album Artist of Broadway Cast and now they are all in Soundtrack.

If I manually set the Artist to Broadway Cast, it does move it for a time. Then when it does maintenance or some other process, it moves it back to Soundtrack.

Please send me the content of the Plex XML info of one of the tracks on that album.

Attaching for Urinetown Overture34468.7z (1.0 KB)

OK, the presence of local in all three of these
guid="local://34468" parentGuid="local://34467" grandparentGuid="local://34446
tells us that the album is completely unmatched. Which is weird.

Has this been already a while in your library or have you added it just now?

When you edit your music library, what is set for ‘scanner’ and ‘agent’?
(hint it must be both ‘Plex Music’)

If I manually change the Artist to Broadway Cast, it is creating a folder for each one called Broadway Cast in the Music View and then putting just one album in that folder.

It has been in my collection for about 2 months. I have not added anything in the last 2 weeks. Went to play something yesterday when I noticed it was all moved.

It is set to Plex. See Images of Advanced Tab.

For the 3 I set to Broadway Cast, it created 3 folders and did not even put them together. Here is the view of the 2 lines of Artists showing the 3 Broadway Casts folders. (Don’t judge my music choices).

If you look up those albums at musicbrainz.org, you’ll find that they are all listed under separate artists. I think they use the composer as the album artist.

Try ‘merging’ those 3 artists.

Am I going to have to go through all this for every album? Seems like a lot of work when it was working before you changed to using a service. The fact that it is not using the local tags seems to be making all the work arounds. That it is not matching to start with needs to get fixed. I should not need to change my Artist tag once the music is loaded. Nor should I have to Match just to get it to use local tags.

I would not need to merge, If we could select how it is displayed. I want All and I want Artists but don’t want a third criteria (by Title).

I mentioned earlier in another thread that a couple of albums seemed to be ignoring the tags I’ve used for “Album Artist” and matching strictly by the info that MusicBrainz has. Plex appears to spend too much time matching the tracks, albums and artists to MB (possibly the accoustic fingerprint thing) and when it does find one, it basically throws away any metadata you have and applies it.

If we have decided, for whatever reason, that the album artist is “Various Artists” or “Broadway Cast,” Plex should respect that. It appears from the screenshots, that Plex has determined that “Broadway Cast” is really “Laurence O’Keefe” and from that point on, will insist on that. The end result is that all of your albums that Plex has mis-identified become associated with that artist, as reflected in the artist bio. With the few albums I had that acted that way, merging, Plex dancing, matching, etc had no affect.

I personally gave up, and removed the albums, changed the metadata so that it matched what Plex thought it should be, and re-added to library, with the Album Artist Plex wanted. By doing that, the albums that Plex couldn’t match with MB, or did respect my tags, didn’t have an incorrect artist bio, and were displayed the way I wanted.

You could completely block access to the Musicbrainz server (and while you’re at it, Allmusic and last.fm), that way Plex probably won’t screw up the local tags?

I’ll try this next week on my server as I’ve completely had it with this buggy (and slow) matching behaviour.
