Bug - Plex app uses mobile data when watching downloaded content

Server Version#:
Player Version#: 10.8.0.5554 (86193d4)

I have been getting warnings from my phone recently about my data usage. I thought nothing of it originally, but when I bought extra data multiple times and keep running out (while being very careful with usage), I looked into it a bit more.

I am 99% certain that the Plex App on my Pixel 6 is using mobile data to stream things when I watch through the downloaded section. It does not use extra mobile data when I disable my SIM, but when it it enabled it seems to use again.

3 days into the month and I have used 700MB of data through Plex alone. And I have only ever downloaded things directly to my phone while on WiFi at home.

Is this known? I think this has been happening for a couple of months now.

Is this the wrong place to report issues and bugs?
Is there a direct email or other place i should report issues to?

Hey sorry your first post got missed. I have not seen that myself but will try to reproduce on my Pixel 7.

It should not matter if you are playing through the download section but curious if you have prefer downloaded content enabled in Settings>advanced>player

I could not repro in a quick test so will need to see your android logs after playing something from downloads

Thank you for the reply. I just checked it again and yeah, I can reproduce it
Played 40seconds of a show from my download list, while being on SIM data and it used 15Mb.

And yes, I also have it set to “preferred”

I am going on holiday for a couple of days, but can support with the logs when I return.

I have the same issue. I listen to downloaded music and Plex still uses cellular data even “Prefer downloaded content” is checked, using cellular data if needed is uncheck.

@rchro if you can message me your android logs after it happens it would be appreciated.

if it is streaming from your server then your server logs should also show that so would like to see those as well covering the same time frame

I, too, have exactly this issue. I’ve taken to turning off mobile data when trying to play when not on my home network.

I am still experiencing this. Forgot to go into airplane mode and then remembered to come post logs.
Sorry for the delay
Plex for Android Logs (Vlieg83).txt (7.7 MB)

Logs are attached. In the data usage screenshot, it was 72MB or so for Plex. Started streaming the local file and had an instand 50mb jump due to buffering from the server over the internet.

Good Afternoon,
Any news here? Anything else we can support with?

Hey. I need the android logs as well as the server logs after it happens.

@rchro the logs you sent me only indicate the time line reporting to server not playback from server. It actually shows “offline=1” which means playing from downloads

@Vlieg83 Your logs from android are not opening correctly. Looks like they may not be encoded properly as it is just random symbols. if you pasted them in a text editor make sure it is set to save it UTF-8 You should also be able to email yourself a zip file android logs from the android app . Would also like the server logs as well.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the long delay.
I tried it again this morning, but now it seemed okay or i might have originally mis analysed it.
Plex Media Server Logs_2024-07-14_08-07-36.zip (3.3 MB)
I am not able to upload the Android App logs, as it is larger than the 8MB limit in the forum (file is 10MB).

For testing:
I opened up the videos i had locally downloaded already. Opened them up, let them buffer, skip past the buffering section continuously. Did this on multiple apps in the 6min between the screenshots below.

I took another screenshot before and after of Plex’s data usage.
In 6min, it seemed to use 40MB - where does all that data go?
Caching for screenshots expired or something and they refetch?

And then 6min later after im finished with the tests

Thanks again for the support.
I have the android logs with me if you still need it.
