For the past few months I’ve exhausted my mobile data cap. Checking app data usage on my phone revealed plexamp is using anywhere between 3.5 and 4.5gb per month. I’ve been using plexamp for at least a year now and Plex for close to a decade and have never experienced this before.
Cellular streaming bit rate is set to 128kbps which is presume is the default because I’d never even checked that setting until recently. The time I spend streaming on cellular hasn’t changed over the indicated period. If anything it has decreased.
What has changed is I have a new phone and Plex now lives on an unraid server whereas previously it loved on my main PC.
Does anyone have any ideas why the data usage is so high? Or what settings I can check? This is really frustrating as I’ve never had issues with my data cap until recently. Needing gmaps to navigate around the city just adds insult to injury
The other day Plexamp consumed 200 MB of mobile data as I drove away from home and my phone switched from wifi to mobile. It was downloading tracks, and it did not seem to respect the setting that told it not to do that on mobile data.
Elan looked at the logs and it was clear that Plexamp did not download any tracks when it did not think it was on wifi… But since the mobile data was definitely used, I am suspicious that Plexamp is making mistakes.
In any case, the nature of your server should have nothing to do with the issue. Double check all of your Plexamp settings, and if you notice a problem at a specific time, grab the logs so the staff can look at them.
Thank you for the information here. I totally missed this reply and made another thread about this this morning
I’ll pull some logs from this morning and send them through on both threads
As I mentioned in my last reply, I forgot I made this thread and never got a notification of these replies.
Regardless, I will pull the logs from this morning and post them back here (and the post I made today). Might take me a bit to find some between looking after my kid who is now home from daycare
Thought I was the only one in this camp. This is approximately 6 hours of usage. I had to switch phones since remote access has stopped working on another phone. Only when the data warning came up did I realize that it was a problem. I attributed this to FLAC and bit perfect playback but even after encoding, it’s still way too much of data being used.

Here are all the logs I could pull from plexamp.
Plexamp.1.log is from today and starts from when I started streaming via android auto. this was my first android based activity with plexamp today.
Plexamp.2.log covers my activity from yesterday but if I recall correctly I had preloaded the cache before heading out. I think I see that in this file at around 17:50
That’s pretty rough. Especially if you are on a limited data plan with your mobile provider. Hopefully Elan can shed some light on these issues. That said, I have a thread going on another forum about this and from what I can tell so far this type of behavior is not always caused by the same factors.
In Plexamp.1.log, I see a bunch of cache hits for tracks followed by a bunch of misses (and thus requests back to server for MP3s and FLACs). This is around pre-caching, and it thinks the network is on Wi-Fi.
If you weren’t on WiFi in that timeframe, I think the bug will be fixed in the next release.
It depends on what the time stamps are on what you are seeing. If you let me know what keywords to look for or what timestamps were involved I can cross check my security camera for when I would have left the LAN.
Regardless, excited to hear there’s a new version on the horizon! And that’s for taking a look at the logs
Removing music? Why does that require such data usage? There isn’t anything to remove! I download an artist to my phone over WiFi and when I’m on cellular it’s as though the app re-downloads the files each time despite them being already present on the device.
