[Bug] - Plex Server Can't Handle Multiple Music Genre Tags

I use ID3v2 tags for my music metadata. Many ID3v2 tags, such as the Genre (TCON) tag can have multiple values. For example, tags with multiple genre values such as:

  • Baroque; Opera
  • Classical;Orchestral
  • Classical;Piano Concerto
  • Pop;Vocal

Unfortunately, unlike some other media servers and media players (or even the Windows File Explorer), the Plex server app does not seem to be able to handle genre tags that have multiple values. It concatenates all values in the Genre (TCON) tag into a single Genre value. So, for an album that is tagged with two genres: Baroque and Opera in the Genre tag, it will only display the album as having the Genre: "Baroque;Opera", instead of listing it under both of the separate genres: "Baroque" and "Opera".

This screenshot of the Pleb Web App shows the malformed Genre list of my Plex Server:

Is this issue already recognised as a limitation of the Plex Server? Thanks.

PS. I originally posted this text a week ago in the Windows forum, where it quickly got buried by new posts, and no-one has looked at the post. Perhaps I might have better luck in this forum?

I've got the same problem.

To be clear, we look for genres separated by "/" character. I'll make the change right now to support ";" separators, seems like a fun thing to do on a Saturday. How's this look?

We'll push the fix in the next couple of days.

Shouldn't it read Foo Bar Foo Bar ? ;) just kidding

I say no, it shouldn't; the semicolon is preferred, partly because you can have genres with slashes in them. We support either form with this change, fi you're using semicolons, you're all in!

Aye, I missed the just kidding clarification off the end.

Great, thanks Elan!

Er, is this supposed to be solved by now? Because it isn't on my Plex...

Doesn't look like this made it into today's build.

How do you see the daily builds? I only know about the server archive at https://plex.tv/downloads/1/archive

Not a daily build.  It was just that a new build was published yesterday.

The new version 0.9.12.2 also doesn't seem to have fixed this genre bug. Was it supposed to?

I deleted my current library from Plex, cleaned the bundles, emptied the trash and rebuilt the library anew.

That seems to have done the trick - Multi-genre tags are now being handled correctly. Thanks!

Chills ran down my spine at the thought of having to recreate my libraries in order to make this work.  I can understand having to do so for a major structural change, such as the premium libraries, but not for something as small as this.

I played around a bit before resorting to that, and I found that, if you go into each individual album that has semicolon-delimited genres and run Refresh (from the left sidebar), it correctly parses the genres for the album.

I changed the library view to 'Albums', then filtered by each semicolon-delimited genre (one at a time).  I opened each album and refreshed.  Then I went back to the filtered list, which is reduced by one, and processed each album until the list was empty.

Still more work than I should have to do, but better than recreating the libraries.

A force refresh on the library would reload metadata for all items, including genres.

Since all votes were lost (again) on the new forum changeover, let’s take this opportunity to consolidate our votes for better tag support in one request.
