[BUG] PlexAmp library combining / overriding album info from ID3 tags

Just started using PlexAmp and so far its great. However I’m noticing some oddities with Album info, especially when its missing intentionally in the ID3 tags. For example I have a bunch of songs by 1 artist, most are singles with the Album ID3 tag field intentionally blank, and then few EPs from that artist that DO have Album populated. However, PMS seems to have arbitrarily decided that 1 of those EPs is the Album for ALL that artist’s songs. ALL the tracks by that artist are listed under that album, which isn’t even close to accurate. Even if I try to clear the Album field for 1 of the tracks, and Save, it is reverted immediately (aka. not saved).

There should just be an “Unknown” placeholder for all songs with no Album info. This is very broken. How do i tell PMS that the info is wrong and to force an update from the ID3 tags? At a bare minimum it should be able to correctly group the tracks that do have Album info, its not even doing that

This sounds like a server topic, just to be clear; Plexamp just displays what the server sends over.

I would recommend reading over the guidelines for music organization.

Generally speaking, tracks require an album, so you can’t just clear it. You can decide yourself to call that “Unknown” but all the metadata and matching (based on Musicbrainz) is quite album-centric.

Ah ok I don’t where to post this then. The forum is not clear. Recommendation how to post this type of question appropriately?

Anyways, generally speaking, tracks do NOT require an Album., What does “require” even mean?.. There will be files in almost literally everyone’s music library that happen to not have an album, either on purpose or accidentally. Sure most tracks have an album, but the server assuming that albums not having an Album is 100% accidental and trying to put them in a specific album, etc.

Further, its just dont doing a good job at this. Currently its not even detecting the albums correctly that ARE there. As I said I have an artist that arbitrarily picked an Album ID3 from a folder of songs by an artist and attached that Album to ALL the songs in that folder… wrong. bad. You can’t have the server arbitrarily putting misc files by a an artist that dont have an album specified, into an random album of that artist.

To be clear, this is a bug report for the above, but the first time i’ve posted anything about Plexamp here, so i’m piggybacking some related gripes. I’m ok with there not being accurate matching, everyone’s library is uniquely different, but there AT LEAST needs to be some options for how to control the matching, for example “use the Plex mystery magic” and “only use ID3 tags” and somewhere inbetween. And whatever Plex can’t exactly match, have it at least have the option to try and match or dump those into “unknown” groupings.

Some people won’t care and will want Plex to do all the magic for them, great, thats what its doing now (poorly). Some people will want control and have already put lots of effort into their ID3 tagging… thats the entire point of the ID3 tags!

This has the added benefit that if we want control, the server can point out our own tagging/organization issues. Currently I used mediamonkey only for file/tag management just because it has useful plugins that make library management options. Plex could replace that easily!

Probably server area, but I’ll do my best to answer here.

Sure, in theory yes. In practice, with the hierarchy of the Plex Media Server, they do. Sorry, that’s just how it is.

By design, if you read the organization rules, it’s folder-per-album.

There is a “prefer embedded tags” yes, but we still require albums, and folders as the organizational unit for an album.

I know that might seem overly strict, but that’s how it is at the moment…
