[BUG] Problem with (E-)AC3 Codec and Windows update 24H2

Thank you. I was losing my mind trying to figure this out. I never would have figured this out.
This worked immediately.

You’re welcome, now if only plex would do something to fix that…

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the licensing restrictions are that seem to be preventing plex from addressing this issue?

Is it possible we’ll never get a fix due to the licensing?

Still broken despite a recent update. They are going to have to address this as more and more of their user base upgrade to 24h2

And because you need to re-fix it every time you update the client

Yeah, as said before you can avoid that by putting the .dll as read only, it will avoid it being replaced by plex installer

Could it be to do with this? I’m suffering the same issue BTW.

A note on AC-3 (ā€œDolby Digitalā€)

AC-3 is an audio codec that supports multi-channel (ā€œsurround soundā€) audio. It’s also known as Dolby Digital.

On versions of Windows prior to Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is included.

Beginning with Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows. However, many device manufacturers will pre-install an AC-3 codec. Also, if you upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2 from an earlier version of Windows, the AC-3 codec will be retained. In these cases, you will still be able to play files encoded with the AC-3 audio codec.

As far as i can remember it was everything Dolby related. Audio and Video.
Video is difficult due to libplacebo and Dolby Vision decoding and audio is a different story.
mpv (the playback engine used) does not decode the Dolby audio stuff. Plex uses the EasyAudioEncoder from Dolby to decode the audio. It could probably also be a bug in that part of the software, then Dolby would need to fix it and Plex would only need to roll out that update.

With a swapped dll that’s not a problem, because it does not rely on EasyAudioEncoder.

This is a problem for me as well. Adding my voice to the pile.

Same problem as everyone else @OttoKerner why has this not been resolved since 24H2 is now a public release with more and more people updating? Seems like our money isnt being well spent?

Garbage support. They have been told a problem and the fix, and yet ads are more important

Is there an update on this? I also just installed Windows 11 and plex audio is not working.

Same issue on same windows build

Updated to Windows 11 24H2. Right after this update EAC on plex desktop software stopped working. This fixed it. Thank you.

Thank you do much , this worked like a charm and for the love of god couldn’t get it working until I seen this post

Adding my name to the pile, had two computers update to 24H2 and now no audio, come on Plex, get this sorted!

Have you had any feedback from the team? This is going to be a huge issue soon as 24H2 rolls out to everyone.

Adding my voice to the choir. Could not get any audio from Plex Desktop app for files that had E-AC3 audio after a fresh install of Windows 11. The linked updated mpv dll resolved that for me.

I will say formerg might be on to something, though. The built in Windows Media Player also fails to play audio from the same E-AC3 mkv files. After driving myself nuts for a while, I installed VLC to test it. VLC has no such problem and plays the audio fine.

This is not so much a problem with Plex, but a mess of communication in the industry when it comes to evolving codecs. I believe I have found a solution to the issue which was posted. Took me a day to find it scouring the web,

The problem

Thanks for listing another way to fix this, however, Plex need to speak up on this, as there’s going to be a lot of users out there suddenly unable to hear anything, there must be a solution Plex can push out.
