[BUG] Problem with (E-)AC3 Codec and Windows update 24H2

This is a good solution, the problem is, for any other users who won’t read this topic, this won’t do anything.

Thank you for your addition

Thank you for this. I’ve been pulling my hair out for hours. Insane that there’s been a solution since June and new Plex installs as of yesterday still have this issue.

Is Plex dead? This is shocking its not fixed yet? I have been impacted as well… I kinda feel like they are old news if this is still unresolved. What is the better platform these days?

PS thanks @Shu_lya - A true hero of the people!!

Jellyfin, but they may lack client apps for your use case. It’s their only major weakness over Plex.

@OttoKerner, what’s the latest status on this issue?

I did what Himmel the Hero would have done.

Jellyfin has a problem with transcoding HDR to a lower resolution.
This is far from a perfect replacement, and they never even acknowledged the issue even after I reported it, they blamed my files and my hardware instead.

See my post here.

With your fix, plex is working great again. I’ll keep that file handy if another update overwrites it.

I’ve been using plex since its birth. It’s been an interesting journey. And for the past bunch of years it’s just worked for me without issues. I’m not a heavy user of the tool and don’t keep up on the latest and greatest. But sounding like plex still a solid choice.

It’s puzzling why they have ignored this bug. Wondering if it’s intentional due to licensing or some sort.

Plex seems to be moving in a more commercial direction. They really have been since the start. That was always the criticism of plex vs xbmc dating back almost 20 years ago.

The E-AC3 codec is not included with windows anymore, that is the main issue.
You can fix it permanently by installing it by yourself with this :

I’d still like a fix from Plex though, this doesn’t fix the issue for people who don’t come to the plex forums.

So do this vs the file copy fix? I just got an update from plex and broke my app again. I copied the mpv file over and things are working again.

I bought the lifetime plex pass ages ago… if i didnt i would likely just cancel my plex pass…

Yes if you install the AnWave thing from github you shouldn’t have to replace anything anymore.

Might not mean anything, but Windows flagged AnWave as a trojan and auto deleted it when I downloaded it today.

Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml

Probably a false positive, but this is also the kind of reason why we need an official solution from plex…

I’ve been looking but, there doesn’t seem to be a way to contact Plex directly? I’d argue this is something that really does need someone at Plex to give an official statement on.

Either “we’re working on a fix by including the missing components in our installer” or “this is the software we recommend installing alongside ours in order to get audio working again”.

Surely if you’re paying a monthly subscription, there must be some support personnel you can bring a case up with? Because bringing it up in the forums has clearly done absolutely nothing and it’s been many months now.

Edit: Do I report this thread? But then pick “other” and tell them this is a legit issue Plex needs to resolve?

I couldn’t find a way to contact Plex directly either. And I’m not sure if mentions are working properly or if @OttoKerner just has us muted/blocked.

I am having the same problem, is plex going to reply on a way to fix this?
I do not want to install AnWave as it is immediately flagged by antivirus

OK after a google search for “windows 11 ac3” I found this:

and I installed it and it works now (tested on EAC3 audio)

Tested here and it works for me as well. There’s no way Plex can’t come to an agreement to include these in their installer if it detects it’s Windows 11 24H2 and above.

Confirm this worked for me as well. Absolutely insane that Plex is simply ignoring such a major bug in it’s core functionality.

At this point I’d say even advertising the desktop player as compatible with Windows is fraudulent.

this fixed it for me too. So does the Plex App just not support AC3 now and we have to MANUALLY keep dependencies up to date? This has been an issue since JUNE and they just don’t care. INSANE tbh

It still does not work! Had to find out about it on a movie night…
