BUG: Rokus are unable to play DVR recorded .ts files, but other non-Rokus players can

I recently started using the Plex DVR function again. I’m recording my local broadcast NFL games. However, when attempting to playback the original .ts file on a Roku, it buffers to 33% and stops leaving the spinning circle. I tried it on TWO different Rokus (ultra and a TCL built-in).

I tried to force transcoding (so, not original), but it doesn’t help either.

If I convert the .ts to HEVC, mkv, then then Rokus can play the recording.

I can, however, play the .ts files just fine on Android and Web.

There are a couple settings in the Roku clients’ Audio & Video settings:

  • Allow MPEG2
  • Experimental 1080P MPEG2

If they’re not enabled you could try doing so to see if it helps.

That did it. Thank you!

Only concern is that might it break (it gives a warning)?

I’ve used it for a while and it’s not caused any noticeable problems, but I get concerned too when Plex labels something as “Experimental.” Hopefully it remains stable. It was introduced in the legacy app and made the transition to the new experience, so hopefully it gets some love.
