[BUG]Shield Video Player frozen for 5-10 seconds at start of playback

I have the same issue. Works fine with my iPhone or Apple TV but shield pro has a frozen screen for the first 5-10 seconds on shield pro

2019 Shield Pro, also having this issue.

@anon18523487 - it is not just me/my media files as you can see.

Same issue here. Using Roku Plex app, I see the same frozen spinning progress for 5-10 seconds every time I play a file. Before the “modern UI” update, I never had this issue.

Same issue here. Using a Chromecast with Google TV.

Same issue here as well with on two different end devices using Google TV

I have the same issue. Nvidea shield 2019

I have the opposite issue on my Shield where I resume playing and the video plays with no audio for around 3-5 seconds. (and of course the Plex app on the Shield janks all the time and reloads whole pages repeatedly - not sure why this is never getting fixed)

I have a Bestbuy Toshiba fire tv that has been doing this for over a year.

It is as if the video was coded to start on the frame 10 seconds after the audio begins.

Sometimes the video will not end and playback stays hung on a black frame for over two hours. I have to manually back out and select the next episode, and it repeats. A reboot sometimes works, but after a few episodes, the symptoms return.

Sometimes the playback for the episode successfully ends and the next episode will start, but stay stuck on the first black frame.

I have the same issue. It freezes on a frame, audio keeps playing and the time bar keeps moving. This lasts a few seconds for me. However, if I run Kodi with PlexKodiConnect on my Shield Pro (2019) playback is fine from the get-go. It’s only when I play from the Android TV app.

I have the same issue, and have for probably the last 9 months on two Shield TVs - one is a 2017 and one is a 2019 Pro

Basically when starting a video it has a freeze frame, usually from about 10 seconds into the video. I agree that this is likely the next keyframe in the video.

Audio starts straight away, but the video remains still until the audio catches up to that frame, then it continues playing fine.

Once you reach the frame and the video starts working, you can rewind to the beginning to see the first part of the video.
If you attempt to rewind before reaching the still frame, the video freezes with the loading wheel and won’t play until pressing back and restarting the video from the menu.

Same issue . Version 2019 NVidea shiled

I had this same issue. I turned OFF Refresh Rate Switching and it fixed my issue.

At the risk of drowning in the deep end of the pool -----

I cannot reproduce any of the errors here:

Equipment:

  1. Shield Pro 2019 - Wired to LAN
  2. Shield Experience 8.2.3 (32.6.518.0)
  3. 2010 Visio 47" (1080p)

App:

  1. Version - 8.22.0.27533

Plex app settings -

  1. VIDEO QUALITY
  • Adjust Automatically - OFF
  • Home Streaming - MAXMIMUM
  • Remote Streaming Quality - 20 Mbps
  • Play Smaller Videos - ON
  1. VIDEO
  • Burn Subtitles - AUTOMATIC
  • Audio Boost - (choice)
  • Display Info - (choice)
  1. ADVANCED
  • Passthrough - HDMI
  • Refresh Rate Switching - OFF
  • Resolution Switching - OFF
  • Allow insecure - On Same Network
  • H.264 maximum level - 5.2

You will see:

  1. Direct Play - No delay at startup
  2. ToneMapping by the Shield as required.
  3. 2160p → 1080p as required.
  4. HDMI audio passthrough.

I believe refresh rate switching needs to be enabled to to see the problem. Or rather, at least if I disable it then the problem goes away.

Kind of related: I also noticed that I can’t rewind in the last minute or so of content. The UI will think it’s playing but the video is frozen with no audio. Might be a different problem though!

Same problem on Sony Bravia Android TV.
It first started with the “new player” a year or so ago whenever that was introduced.
I switched to use the legacy player which never had an issue.
The legacy player was removed and at some point the issue was resolved with the “new player”.
Over the last month or so the issue has returned, every file I play gets audio playing fine but picture is frozen for 5 seconds or so, after that everything is fine.

Reproduce the issue with the test file above and then immediately grab the logs and post them:

I can not reproduce the issue with your file @ChuckPa.

However, when the issue does happen, the issue ONLY happens with the Shield. I can play the same media hundreds of times on any other of my Plex clients (Plex for Windows, Roku, app.plex.tv) without the aforementioned “video lag.” This leads me to believe it is Shield specific.

It is possible it is network related, I won’t rule that out, but the Shield and Roku are both connected on the same WiFi, no internal restrictions, etc. and are in the same cabinet, so again, I should think the behavior would be the same.

I have also pulled a temp network cable in the past to verify the issue still occurred when hard-wired and it did.
When @anon18523487 was in here, he(she?) suggested it may be a keyframe issue. That may be, but again, the delay only happens on the Shield.
If it is “keyframe specific” maybe we can nail that down and pass on our findings to the Shield dev team.

Can you generate your own Sample file that fails and then post a link to that so @ChuckPa can try and reproduce?

Yep, doing so now. I’m using MKVMerge.

Here are server (DEBUG) logs and my Shield logs from when I just tried to play “my version” - the cut down 3 minutes that I am uploading now even - not the full length movie that I have. Video is instantly frozen while audio plays in the background for approximately 10 seconds - this happened on my first play attempt.

Attempted playback started at 16:52. Sample file uploaded.
