Reproducable here too on Sony Bravia Android TV.
Using @ChuckPa’s file, @Pow4Life181’s file, or a different file? If it’s a different file, can you also make a sample and post logs showing the sample failing?
Forgive me?
ONE device at a time please.
This thread is for Nvidia Shield.
Feel free to create a parallel thread and link.
Thin clients (TV’s) don’t have the same processing power as the shield and are therefore subject to all the same issues as transcoding to your Plex/Web browser where burning a subtitle into the video can bury your NAS.
edit Description added and replaced files with PMS debugging enabled set
These logs are from Shield TV Pro Client, Shield TV Pro Server, random file from my collection.
I can consistently reproduce the problem with these steps and with any file:
- Open Plex
- Start playback
- Pause playback
- Wait for screensaver
- Wake from screensaver
- Resume playback
- Observe audio start with playback of video starting in sync with the audio some number of seconds earlier
I can spuriously observe this issue when starting files without the additional steps of allowing the screensaver (or switching to another app and then back to Plex), but the above path is nearly 100% for me.

@ntb Can you provide more info/context for @ChuckPa & team please?
Are these logs showing the issue with my test file, Chuck’s, a different one?
I edited my previous and provided context and reproduction steps for my setup.
edit Just to clarify - in spite of the issues below, i have refresh rate switching enabled on all of my plex clients.
Refresh rate switching speed is highly dependent on your TV’s implementation. I have TVs that do it very quickly and with no banners/notifications, so it seems very fast. My Vizio TVs flash banners and otherwise do stuff that makes the process highly noticeable and slow. This is further exacerbated by audio equipment that renegotiates HDMI handshakes on the mode switch.
Yep, it’s a Vizio and does all the annoying banner crap… Can’t stand it.
I’ll note that I don’t believe this to be a TV-specific issue. I have 3 different makes/models of TVs that exhibit this problem and I’ve seen Android banner popups during this issue, so the OS is definitely actively drawing to the screen.
Shield Pro here as well. This is happening with Refresh Rate switching off for me as well. Started with the rollout of the new modern layout.
Having the same issue. Sometimes it’s worse than other times, but I will more often than not get one of two manifestations:
- The video will simply start playing skipped into the file by a second or two
or - I will see a freeze frame from several seconds into the file (as much as 10 secs) but hear the audio from the beginning; once the audio catches up to the position of the frozen frame, the video starts playing from that point and continues normally, everything in sync
Here is a link to a sample file exhibiting behavior #1
And here is a link to a sample file exhibiting behavior #2
In the case of this particular #1, when I play it starts from approx 2 seconds in where the guy is standing at the top of the stairs saying “Thomas”, just before the other guy makes a buzzer sound. I don’t see the fadeup from black or the establishing outside shot.
In the case of this particular #2, the freeze frame is of a blown-out plastic food container (00:00:10.385) which I see for the 10 seconds while hearing all of the audio prior. (Slight gross-out warning, BTW.)

as already mentioned, see Is anybody working at Plex going to fix the Nvidia shield startup freezing but audio plays and then catches up fix - #105 by ChuckPa
