BUG: Split Movie Files Incompatable with Plex HTPC

Server Version#: 1.28.1.6104
Player Version#: 1.23.2.3194
Desktop OS: Windows 10 21H2

When playing Split File Movies, Plex HTPC fails to properly switch to the next part of the film.

Part1 will play successfully, but once Part2 hits, Plex HTPC will lose audio for the film and the progress bar will remain full.

I’ve tried this with multiple movies and files on multiple computers and it consistently fails. I would provide logs if necessary, but the issue is easily repeatable…any 2 files marked cd1 and cd2 added to Plex will fail when played in Plex HTPC.

Note: When playing via Plex Web or Plex for Kodi, this issue is not encountered and split file movies play almost seamlessly.

I can reproduce this but don’t know if HTPC supports stacked media.
I guess you don’t want to join the files?

If it’s not supported, it really should be. Multi-part video has been a part of Plex as long as I have been using it (At least 7 years), and all other Plex clients handle it reasonably well. Concatenating the files is an option if you have the technical know-how to do it without losing information in the files, but that’s a work-around and a long-term established feature like this should really be supported in all clients.

Exactly, especially since it’s even still listed in the naming and organizing standards…

Since this is clearly a bug or lack of handling…is this the right place to post it to get visibility? Everything I read indicates it is, but is there a better replace to submit clear bugs?

This is the place to post (so you did).
Plex HTPC isn’t the only client that lacks support for stacked files and while there’s no conclusive list, it’s at least mentioned in the support article, that not all clients do. Personally I favor to actually merge such files (e.g. Lord of the Rings Special Extended Edition which was released on 2 discs) – this gets rid of all the back-and-forth.

Thanks for the tip. Someone else pointed me to that solution a few days ago as well, and it seems to be working well without messing up Dolby Vision content.

Unfortunately a media file in multiple parts is really not supported on most clients. I would highly recommend anyone who has this circumstance to remux them into a single file (using above instructions). Fortunately such cases are rare these days mostly occurring in the rare cases where a movie spans multiple BD disks (such as Lord of the Rings).

Thanks for this, it was semi mentioned; but for people like me who prefer the original file, it’s unfortunately not a full solve…

That said, I would concede that Plex’s versioning option would allow for having both…if only it provided just a tad bit more info than resolution/quality.

Do we anticipate this support being dropped from Plex? Is there a roadmap indicating as such people can prepare for?

For example, the original standard Extras folder suddenly being scanned into Plex has been pretty painful surprise to manage post implementation.

Thanks!

You know that remuxing won’t re-encode your content, do you?
