We have gone off topic here so I’m going stop updating in this thread and make a new one if I feel this is a Plex issue, but thanks for your incite and ideas.
I have the HDHomeRun CONNECT DUO. I unplugged my RCA signal amplifier/splitter and got the signal down to 85%, same problem. I removed amp, splitter and power strip surge protector, straight from antenna to HDHomerun. No difference. I’m going to try taking the antenna directly to my TV next and will decide what to do or not do.
Thanks again for your help, Hopefully Plex will look into the Storage Location Setting missing issue more in depth.
@CraigWally I know its been a while but this is not forgotten, in fact I’ve been able to repo the “random” missing storage location a few times and the trickiest part was finding why.
But we think we identified a common cause with much more logging and testing (and its due to an android bug where it doesn’t always return the info we need).
I’ve actually been ruining a test build with a fix (using a different method to get the info) and its been working so far, we need to give it a bit more testing but just wanted to give you some feedback in this an assure you its not forgotten, and it should be fixed in an upcoming update.
I’m having this same problem with the missing ‘Storage Location’ option on the Shield. It is not random for me - no matter how many times I restart or reinstall, it’s not there. My previous hard-drive stopped working, and I need to change the directory, so this glitch has literally rendered my account useless. I’m paying $7 a month for an app/account that does not work on my system, despite it touted to work harmoniously. I have sat back and waited for a fix, but I’m wasting my money here just waiting and waiting. I’ve just paid yet another month of subscription, for ZERO available service to me. When is a fix likely???
This is driving me nuts, I cannot use the Nvidia Shield as a Plex Media Server, which was my primary reason for purchasing it. I have a 1TB external SSD drive, formatted ExFAT. My media content is on another drive that I would ultimately like to transfer over once I have this thing working correctly.
The external drive appears in the Shield Device settings as removable storage (1TB). Plex Media Server does not even give me the option to choose Storage in Settings -> Plex Media Server.
I have completely factory reset Shield, set up Plex from scratch, etc. One time I did get the storage option in Plex settings, but only showed me ‘internal’, despite Shield having a recognized removable storage drive.
My versions:
Shield 8.01 (current as of 11/4/19)
PlexTV app 7.23.0.13123 (took latest update 11/4 from Shield/Google store)
Please, at the least, provide us an update of what/when we can expect this to be resolved. I’m ready to move onto a different home media storage option.
The issue that was identified at the time by both us and nvidia was fixed and confirmed fixed even by nvidia themselves, this was extensively tested (I took a while to even find the issue).
If you guys are running the latest version and still see any issue than this is something else, the good part though is that more logging was added after that build to both pms log and logcat, so this should help understand future issues better.
With that said @PHL would you be able to gather a logcat from you’re device? If you don’t know how to do it can help in DM.
@mikec_pt having this issue as well. Just got the Nvidia Shield 2019 (to replace my old Windows 10 machine that is my original Plex server). Initial setup went fine and Plex Server is running
Plugged in new 8 TB hardrive and configured Plex libraries to save on it along with Change Storage Location. Added a few music files just to make sure everything worked. It did.
Put Shield to sleep moved harddrive to my pc to copy over all movies and music. Once finished reconnected harddrive to Shield. Plex server wasn’t running so I restarted the shield.
After restart I noticed I needed to start the Plex server. I did and the Storage Location setting is missing.
It is in the midst of slowly scanning the library files and updating the database. It is updating to the correct storage location (the external harddrive) but the option is not visible.
I wonder if this is intentional so it doesn’t let you mess up things in the middle of it (I dunno for sure but can check).
Can you confirm if after a while or when it finishes it does show?
And btw, having PMS in USB would most likely be slow, if you’re adding a 8TB storage I’m guessing that’s for media mostly, in which case I would advice on keeping PMS in the shield drive (you can use the “user accessible” option if you wan to be able to easy access the PMS folders).
That said the option should still show.
Yes, I just checked. It did come back, it was not there last night. I even am in the middle of refreshing all the metadata again for the movies as I notice maybe about 2% of the movies are missing the metadata. Wish there was a way to update only the metadata missing and not refreshing the entire library. I know refreshing individual items is possible but would have had me try to hunt them all down which isn’t easy to see sometimes. (since the posters show a snapshot of the actual movie and not the poster)
I have the Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 version so it only comes with 16GB internal storage. I am seeing this is a mistake on my part as I should have gotten a the 2017 version which has a 500 GB HD. The only way to extend storage space on the 2019 version is with a USB HD. MY Plex metadata is about 15 GB in size so I don’t have another option but use the external hard drive.
I am hoping once all the metadata is downloaded things will speed up as the server sometimes errors out showing the libraries when it is refreshing metadata
Just a little bit more about the issue. The location icon had disappeared for at least 3 days and through multiple reboots of the Shield before it came back. Library scanning was not set to auto scan so after those reboots I had to start the scanning of the libraries again (as it was a first scan of all media including music and family photos/videos as well).
With the refresh of the metadata for movies that I started this morning, the location icon is still accessible.
