Server Version#:1.18.4.2171
Just updated to the latest server released today and now when I go into the plex app on my Shield it no longer shows the data storage location on my shield - on the row that used it have it only says the server version and that the server is running. When going to the web app everything seems to be set up correctly and I can access the drive files fine from the web or device. Was this display removed with this update? Want to make sure nothing is broken…
You’ve checked a number of tags,
- Where is the primary server? nVidia or Synology?
- Which Players are being used?
Hey There,
Sorry - wasn’t sure if I was supposed to just do one tag or not. The primary server is NVIDIA - players are either the Nvidia, web app (via safari), or Apple TV. all players seem to be able to access the files fine…?
My shield app is 1.18.4.2171.
I did notice, after the upgrade, I needed to sign in again in the browser.
Everything came right back as it was and I’m still server owner.
I am accessing it via Chrome on Linux primarily.
Also signed in via Safari and all was good.
Might you be able to get the server logs?
Server logs attached. As I said, it seems like I can access stuff fine, but for whatever reason I have no option on the Shield server settings to even select a storage location, its just gone?
Plex Media Server.log (5.2 MB)
So I ended up shutting the server down, ejecting the drive, unplugging the drive, restarting the shield, plugging the drive back in, and starting up the plex server again and now the storage location setting shows up again? Not really sure why that was necessary since it appears that the server upgrade caused the problem in the first place. Let me know if the logs show anything odd.
I would have preferred the entire ZIP file (allows me to see more / previous startup)
I do see , which you might want to check out,
Jan 06, 2020 21:50:40.536 [9601] ERROR - NAT: PMP::getPublicIP, couldn't initialize: -3:Unable to get Gateway
As for the storage, there was a report where a USB SSD interface was shutdown by the Shield. Might this have happened to you too?
What does that error indicate? Attached the full .zip for further analysis and thanks for the help thus far. I did also have issues where my Apple TV lost the stream a few times over the weekend, does that show up at all in the logs? I didn’t shut down the SSD interface tonight but did restart the shield, wouldn’t that have shown up differently? In general, if restarting the shield do I need to first turn off the shield or does that not matter (does a shield restart gracefully turn off the server)?

I did a little experimenting with my shield. (2019 Pro).
I found that with the new 8.x Experience, network mounts disconnect after a while if not used.
I did need to tell it to reconnect everything. When it did, the NAS became visible again and all shares on it so I could add another library. Even though I could not see shares to make a new section, I could play from the existing ones. I don’t have a lot of shield experience but this implies it keeps active shares and ‘browsed shares’ separately. It appears to need a fresh “browsed shares list” (same as Windows).
Might this explain what you’re seeing?
The only other thing I saw in your logs was it lost internet at one point. but recovered and continued without incident.

I also have a 2019 Shield Pro, however, my hard drive is plugged into the shield and treated as external storage - I am not connecting to a NAS. I made sure to set up the Shield to not sleep. What did you tell to reconnect?
I have also attached the logs from my Apple TV to see if that sheds any light on the lost stream from 1/5 (perhaps related to the mission storage selection I experienced last night). Anything unusual in there, specifically around 7PM?

Shield settings -> Device Preferences -> Storage -> Network Storage
I’m confused, I have the drive setup correctly - I was just noting that my drive isn’t connected via NAS. My drive is plugged in directly to the shield’s USB port.
Anything of note in the ATV log?
I saw nothing in the Plex logs.
I’m trying to remember, and hope this might mean something to you, there was a case where the SD card (or another port) on the Shield would sleep while PMS was running. The unfortunate part in all this is that it was the storage for PMS itself which was being turned off by the Shield at the Android level. Everything would run as long as it was already in memory.
Nothing in the recently shared Apple TV logs either? I thought I saw some network related errors in there…?
Hmm - not sure about the attached storage on the shield going to sleep, I can certainly look into that. I am fairly sure I have all sleep related settings on the shield off. It’s just odd that this event seems to align with the server update and subsequent Shield reboot, and that from the outside perspective the server was still actually working fine (could still access all files remotely), its just that the storage option was completely removed from the server settings within the Shield.
There is an issue with the Shield’s server module.
I was just chatting with the dev team now.
The problem seen relates to transcoding.
I’m not sure how this would/could be related. I wonder if I need setup a USB drive and test?
The Apple TV log showed the server module problem?
If transcoding related, I am actually using the HDHomerunEXTEND as the tuner so how I thought that works is the server doesn’t need to do any transcoding.
Please hold off on mentioning ATV, LiveTV, or Tuners for the moment?
I’m spinning up a USB drive now for my shield. If there’s something going on, I’ll find it.
Ok sure, I thought you were saying the ATV logs showed something the server logs didn’t, and you mentioned transcoding but I wanted to make sure that you knew how my setup was using the tuner transcoder in the event the logs showed something there too.
As I mentioned, even while the storage option had disappeared, the server still seemed to know to use it. Just turning the server off and on didn’t make the option come back, nor restarting the shield on its own. After doing the specific procedure of shutting the server off, ejecting the drive, restarting the shield, plugging the drive back in, and restarting the server the storage selection option showed up again as it was there before the server upgrade (and was referencing the backup drive).
Any luck yet reproducing the problem? It doesn’t look like the server log files go back very far in time (only a few minutes?), is there some other way to get an extended history to see other instances of errors?
Just about to start.
I had stuck in an EXT4 formatted drive which was full of content.
SILLY ME! lol
It’s formatted NTFS now and almost done loading up with some things.
As for the retention, If you’ve turned VERBOSE on, turn it right back off please.
With Verbose on, max retention is about 4 minutes of elapsed time.
With it off, you get 20-30 minutes when active; several hours when otherwise quiescent
