I’ve been noticing this problem for a while now and it has become a big issue for me. I watch shows/movies with subtitles because of hearing impairments, so almost all my media comes with .srt files which will automatically turn on.
However, I noticed that the subtitles will STOP loading once there is three dots in a row, i.e. “…” (minus the quotation), if I’m watching it through the Roku app. For example, if the dots appear in midway through the files in a dialog, then from that point on, the rest of the subs cut off and will no longer appear. It does the same thing on my phone’s and PC’s web-player.
Af first, I don’t mind going into the files to remove one period. However, I’m finding myself have to do it more and more now that I’ve added more shows. But if I’m watching it on the road, it’s an inconvenience because I have to stop and wait to get home to fix it. I don’t even know there’s a problem until I’m into the episodes/movie. It’s no longer practical. I just want to enjoy the show.
I would like to make a correction, it’s might not just be three dots. I’m still looking for the sub files for the three dots examples as I’ve corrected most of them or downloaded alternative subtitles. However, I’m now wondering if it’s really the dots or if there’s more to it. For example, in the case of the two subtitles below, the three dots don’t even come into play. However, I do remember that for some problems with the three dots, it works after I delete the entire line and re-type in the dialogue.
Another example would be the Asian drama, Shuttle Love Millennium, which I’m currently watching. On episode two, the subtitles load just fine. At least until 3 minutes and 26 seconds mark where only half the subtitles appear and suddenly the rest got cut off. In this instance, it’s not three dots, but because there’s a space in the translation files. This too often happens. I’ve attached the srt. file for that as well. In all instances, I have to load plex on my Roku App (where it happens 90% of the time), note the time where it was cut off, and then go into the srt file to see what’s causing it. The cases are very interesting because it’s not just three dots in a row, sometimes it’s a comma or randomly placed space. One time (I don’t remember which movie), there was a line break between a dialogue that cut off the subtitles.

However, my goal to posting here is not because I need file fix. what I’m hoping for is for the plex subtile decoder to be able to overcome this problem on it’s own. For the issue, I’ve noted that sometimes the android app and the web browser are able to play it just fine and only the Roku app would have the problem. Other times, it would be all three.
Even more, on my Home Class Media Player, the subtitles was able to play just fine. As I’ve stated before, I have no issue going into my file to fix a few files or so. However, it’ll become very cumbersome if I’m hosting hundreds of episodes on my plex account so I can watch it away from home only to find out that the subtitles will cut off.
Hmm. I’m on the fence on this one… On one hand I would like to see Plex overcome subtitles that are incorrectly formatted but, on the other hand, Plex just needs to conform/support the format the way it was intended. Any other iteration is a crap-shoot. It’s a roll the dice type of thing.
What if Plex did attempt to overcome/fix this issue. What about the next abnormal anomaly found in a .srt file.
You can batch convert tens of thousands in a few minutes. I know, I’ve done it before. Took like 7 minutes.
I understand what you meant. However, I’m curious about the fact that the web version and the app version were able to overcome the error while the roku app wasn’t able to. is there a difference in the decoder for each version?

Not to sound like an a** but that just makes me believe you do have the problem on all clients you use. The word sometimes suggests that it doesn’t always work right.
it’s okay. i just want make note of the situation so that you guys are aware of it. I’m well aware that subtitles files could sometimes have formatting problems. But if certain clients, i…e. web browser and android app version could play and Roku doesn’t, and sometimes vice versa, I could only assume that the decoder may be different for different clients or that there could potentially be a bug.
in my case, if having, for example, a misplaced line break or coma made it not work in one client but work in another is very frustrating. Especially as the issue won’t even appear until the media is being played. Even though batch converting is available, I would not know which files has the issue.
As for the bug, I’m just want to report it since it’s been happening more frequently so i thought to report it so others wouldn’t have the same issue.
I actually wouldn’t worry about that. Just throw them all in and hit convert. If nothing is wrong with the sub then the conversion will still happen with no corrections.
