Buying a console, Ps4 or Xbox One?

Hi there. I am on the verge of purchasing a new console with a blu-ray player and Plex.

We are not aiming for 4K though so it won´t be XBone X.

But, we do have a Xbox 360 and I remember that being very restricted, that is to 720P and the fact if the content has .mp3 audio instead of AAC/AC3 the sound will lag.

So I am wondering before we decide which we buy, do either versions have some bugs that I should be aware of? I want of course 1080P, and AC3. Dunno if either can pass-through DTS-HD or AC3-MA.

Regards.

Check the forum sections for each platform. Not sure about PS4 but the Xbox new app is a hot mess and has major bugs. In fact, its so bad I’d suggest you look at a product other than Plex.

Personally if I were to choose between the PS4 and XBOX 360, I would pick the console that I will game on the most and that has the best Blu-Ray player. The PS4 has one of the best, if not the best, BD players available (not surprising since Sony won the BD wars) and I think it’s the best gaming console right now. As for what it supports via the Plex client, here’s a handy FAQ for you:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204377253-What-media-formats-are-supported-

In the end (for me), I would not let the Plex client decide what gaming console I purchase, as there are many cheaper alternatives for a Plex player that work many times better than a PS4/XBOX.

^^ This x100.

On another note, I wouldn’t bother with the Xbox 360, it is not longer a supported Plex client. Microsoft is not accepting updates on that platform, so any bugs that exist are there to stay.

On the Xbox One vs PS4 side, guess that really up to games you play and what your friends you play with have (since PlayStation refuses to support crossplay). I’m personally in the Xbox camp and love it, but everyone is a little different and has their own needs. Do some research and pick the one with the best fit.

Xbox will play 1080p and AC3 just fine. There is still no pass through option for HD audio formats as Microsoft has not released this to third party applications yet.

But does it work on the PS4? The pass through?

I don’t have a PlayStation to verify, but the link posted by @kegobeer-plex above, What Media Formats are Supported, seems to indicate that DTS is not supported and will be transcoded to either AAC or AC3 depending on the reciever, so I would guess that HD audio formats would not be either.

Hm, okay I can see both would require transcoding for it to work with DTS. Is there a “normal” blu ray player that can handle plex and dts / dtsHD/ AC3 MA?

If not, then I´ll just buy a BD-Drive for my desktop pc instead.

My Xbox One S now passes through DTS-HD to my AVR now (that wasn’t the case 5 days ago using a sample size of 1 title, David Gilmour Live in Pompeii). I need to test more titles and formats. I replaced my AVR 5 days ago (Pio vsx-1131 for vsx-1124) so that could have something to do with it. New AVR has Atmos, DTS-X. Another consideration if using Plex w/ Xbox One for audio listening. If you have hi-rez audio files (i.e. flac) above 48khz, they get downsampled to 48khz.
