I´m using Plex now since one year for Videos and Photos.
The Website looks very fine…great. But the reality is different. So i will leave plex forever and also i already canceld my Plexpass.
Here my reasons:
The Vdeoformats sometimes seems to be very “difficult”. Somtimes the cover are missing also after re-index with force of the library…1 year now, no change between the versions. Format is mp4…and why this peace of software won´t play .avi? All of that get´s me more and more angry. Again…some usual .mp4 also still not running, i don´t know why…
I was hoping, that known errors, also mentioned here in the forum will be tracked. Instead of this a VR Version is coming…What the F… are you doing??
Still problems with transcoding, every time on a 2,2 Ghz Server. Nearly every time i ´cant play it on mobile with defently enogh bandwith in both directions. A HD Video from Playstore runs smoothly on that connection.
So i decided to look for something else and was successful. I found the Software e*by. Everything i missed with
Plex is just running VERY smooth. Again: Very mooth including transcoding on the same server has no problem!
Ups…it plays .avi without any question…great!! Missing covers or pictures for folder…just there.
This software rund so much better with the deault parameters.
Sorry Plex, i gave you one year to get improvements…but i´ll leave now forever. I really was frustrated at the end.
That said. If the cover is missing, you probably didn’t name your movie properly and Plex can’t find a match. It plays .avi files perfectly, same with .mp4.
Introducing VR has nothing to do with your errors, so what’s your point?
You could try posts logs for people here to troubleshoot. This is your first post here, obviously you never asked for help with your problems.
All that said, glad you found something that suits your needs, have fun with Emby!
It works perfectly with .mp4 and high framesrates per second,? Come around and have a look at lot of
.avi files…also from known smartphones …i tried different versions and get problem every time. I also named the moview in the right way.
Forgot to say it works with TV Shows…sorry.
Regarding VR: Maybe that is the wrong priority, just my opinion.
Yes…my first post, correct, i read a lot of things here in this forum very often and some of the topics absolutly matched with my problems. I followed the threads long enough and tried, like the other
forum users any suggestons and tips.
However, don´t get me wrong, i was 1 year now a customer who has payed for it and i had no problem to pay. It´s my decision to move further.
I have my issues with Plex and I have switched to Emby for a period of time and back to Plex because there were actual operational issues for my setup with Emby.
Emby has now fixed the problems I ran into so, as I stated in another post, I am on the fence about which I should use full time.
My issues with Plex has almost nothing to do with its operation or reliability but rather with the way the company deals with their customer base and with the LARGE number of unfinished features the Plex leaves on the table. That poor behavior has not changed BUT Plex is nearly perfect for correctly named files at matching and Plex plays every single thing I throw at it.
Plex is NOT perfect but neither is Emby. Right now I am running Plex as my primary system but I am running both systems side by side and only the watched status is an issue and it only takes a few minutes to catch whichever system I am not using up so switching is pretty easy.
Over the next few weeks I will decide which I will stick with but I am in no rush and the only reason for my bad feeling about Plex and the only reason I might switch to Emby permanently is Plex’s behavior as a company. There is NOTHING that I have encountered in Plex or Emby that makes one technically superior to the other however Plex is somewhat more polished.
The reasons @avaupel gave for leaving Plex and the failure to ask for help even once makes the post seem a bit suspicious to me. It is not that they are not valid reasons but it is just that any user should make some effort to get the help that the users and many ninjas and a few employees will readily give if asked. Without that effort a goodbye post of that sort sounds more like trolling than like a legitimate attempt to help or inform others.
@Elijah_Baley, is there a reason why you wouldn’t continue to run both of them, and just gravitate toward the system that is running better at the time?
I’m not sure about Emby, but Plex running in a non-used state doesn’t seem to be a resource hog. I assume both are similar in that respect. Just roll with whichever one is easier to operate after a six pack, until the other makes major improvements.

Actually that is kind of what I intend to do. It is just, once I finally decide, I will no longer expend the effort needed to keep the watched status in sync between the two systems and I may remove the client app from my clients for the one I have decided to drop. Of course I may not do that as, mostly, having an app sitting unused on a client does not take any resources either.
One other thing is that, since I refuse to risk interactions that could mess things up by running multiple servers on the same machine or by running a server on a machine that has other tasks by dropping one system completely I can also, at least until I find another job for it, take an entire computer out of service.
@Elijah_Baley I’ve been following your odyssey, and you make some compelling points. As a result, I’ve been debating giving Emby a shot myself. My original Plex Server PC is probably up to the task.

I though this was locked but I guess it became unlocked.
@AmazingRando24 - I did not intend for anyone to follow my odyssey or make any move because of what I posted but rather I was just trying to give some information. I take no responsibility for the results of any changes in your system you might make. >:) o:)
“I am not a roll model” - Two bonus points for correctly identifying the famous (or infamous) source.
I too run both on seperate computers, and don’t worry about the watched status. I basically run emby for the internet down scenario. Yes I know all about the network setup to enable plex to run but can’t handle everything Being available to my Grandkids. So Emby works fine for that situation.
As far as the op, 1 post! I run Plex off a RPi3 and it handles everything I throw at it. Including mp4, avi and ts. You didn’t even ask!

For the record that forum account was created just before posting the I am leaving plex message. So user does not bother to use the forums to get help but does actually find the time and bother to say bye !
