I have the 2019 shield pro and installed an external drive specifically for my plex media server. It was setup within shield as just a removable drive and I went into the plex app and moved all the data to the external driver. I noticed though that everything except the very large cache folder moved to my external drive. I am now wasting over half of the 16gb built-in space on the shield because the plex cache app is not copied over to the external drive.
Is it safe to copy the cache folder to the external drive or can I just delete it?
It’s been over a months for a simple question and not a single response from anyone with any input whatsoever.
My cache folder is taking almost all my space on my internal drive for my shield even though it’s set as an external drive for my storage.
From reading several forum posts this is a known issue for several years. The whole point of moving my Plex to an external drive for my shield is that the shield only has 16gb of space and my Plex cache is using over 90% of my nvidia shield space.
How is it possible that this is still an issue after all this time? Especially since the shield has such a small amount of internal storage.
Please help asap my shield is almost out of space!!!
Yeah they don’t seem to think of this as a problem that needs fixing, but it makes zero sense to me where we’re given an option that says use an external drive for Plex data and yet they still fill gigabytes of space onto internal storage regardless.
I don’t put much else on my SHIELD so the space itself isn’t a big concern to me, but having Plex churn cache on the internal flash of the SHIELD will eventually kill the flash and basically break the SHIELD as there is no way to replace it once the write endurance runs out.
Plex devs please help, we need to be able to move the cache folder permanently to an external drive or else what’s the point is using an external drive for a large library?!
This has been an issue since 2020 and there hasn’t been a single update to address this issue, this needs to be fixed ASAP!
Why is there even an option to move Plex to an external drive if you aren’t moving the cache folder which takes up the most space and continues to grow over time?
Thanks but that doesn’t help as I’ve already done that. Plex does not move the Cache folder when performing this which is the reason for my repeated posts. The cache folder continues to expand when you add media which negates the reason for wanting to move your Plex server to an external drive.
As explained in the thread, there are two ways to add storage. Removable does not allow the cache to be moved, internal storage replaces the 16 GB so that cache is now on the external drive. I would get a fast USB 3.0 drive to be replace the internal.
