I’m a new subscriber to Plex though I’ve used it for my personal media for a year or so. I decided to pay so that I could watch my stored content on mobile devices and out of my home network. This feature works wonderfully.
For tv, I have an RCN basic cable subscription with some premium channels (HBO, SHO, Starz). I’m paying for a TIVO cable box that allows me to record pretty much anything that’s broadcast. I’m paying $20/month for the box and don’t like that I can’t stream most content within my home to other devices and can’t do it at all outside the home as you can with streaming apps such as Youtube TV or Sling TV.
I’m interested in the Live TV/DVR feature in Plex and was looking at the Silicondust HD Homerun Prime to use with an RCN cable card. I don’t care about recording premium channels as I use the apps on my Fire TV devices to watch non-live content. My concern is that I won’t even be able to watch premium channels at all due to DRM. I’ve heard that this might even affect network channels like FOX or CBS, which seems particularly offensive since I can watch these using over the air antennas.
Does anyone know if I can watch premium channels using the Homerum Prime box? I’d also like to be able to record some of the network channels such as FOX and CBS. It would be great to watch TV within the same app, Plex, that I use for my stored content, especially since Plex allows you to watch remotely from outside the home network but if it’s going to feel clumsy and slow with many channels blocked from viewing then I’d just stay with my current setup.
Anyone have this working for them?
