My Provider (Verizon FiOS) protects (DRM) some channels, but I can still watch them with my HD HomeRun app. But through Plex they show up as protected.
I understand why I wouldn’t be able to record these, but why can I not view them via Plex

Plex does not support DRM content at this time. It has no means by which to import authentication keys. If you have the card, in the back of the HDHomeRun (e.g. Prime), which provides the keys and decrypts prior to giving to PMS, you are fine.
well, yea I have the cablecard in in the back of the HDHR Prime if that’s what you mean (kinda wouldn’t work without it).
So I guess you are meaning something different?
Plex doesn’t have any means to support subscribed services (like HBO, etc).
Those require encyrption keys. Most cable providers can provide that in the M-card.
It sounds like yours does not?
Yea no idea. It is an M card.
So there appear to be two different kinds of DRM channels; subscription based (like HBO) which I can’t view with either Plex nor their app. Then there are others (like Nat Geo) which also show as DRM and I CAN view them in their app, but not with Plex.
Correct, Plex does not support any DRM’d channels while SiliconDust for some of their apps / supported platforms.
What gets me is I have a cablecard and some of the channels still show up as DRM protected.
The Cable card is for your cable provider.
The card only maps frequencies used and and RF parameters.
Nowhere in the mechanism is there a means to decrypt the stream (DRM’d conent)
That stinks. It is only a few channels though.
Thank the monopolies for that. Silicon Dust is obligated to obey law. The Cable provider distributes keys which is how your Set Top Box decrypts.
The sad part here is Plex can only capture the stream produced. If there are any DRM operations happening, they happen inside the HomeRun box. Plex has no ability to store or use DRM keys at this time.
drm is supported on windows because the hdhome run supports the windows drm capabilities.

These 3rd party software solutions run on many different platforms, and support live TV from our hardware. We have a DVR Add-on for KODI, and the other software products have their own DVR solutions. DRM content viewing is not available on these platforms.
