So I have some music files that are in DSF, and when doing a quick google search, I am seeing people are having issues with Meta Data with Plex regarding DSF files, which means it sounds like Plex can play them. However, when I try to add my folder with the particular DSF album, it doesn’t show up. Am I doing something wrong here or can Plex not read DSF files? I really would hate to convert the files to any other format, other than it’s original state. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.
What’s a DSF file?
Is it another name for DSD? Direct Stream (Digital) File? Something similar?
I’m not a lossless audio nerd^h^h^h^h expert, somebody else can probably help for real.
A million years ago there was a … it was like MIDI, but not, sequence audio format called DSF. I think. An Amiga thing? I can’t imagine that’s what you’re asking about.
Haha yeah, I believe DSD and DSF files are pretty much similar if not the same thing I think ones just a container and the other is the file itself (gonna need someone to fact check me on that)? Anyways it’s fine haha, MIDI is cool, and although I wasn’t born around the time of Amiga when it was out, won’t lie, .MOD and the Videotoaster always impresses me with the Amiga, of course I am assuming you know the Amiga quite well?
Right! .MOD and “Tracker” audio. That was it. Such cool stuff, back in Amiga-times. Apparently there’s even still a small active community around the music. Sadly I never had one, but I got to use a Toaster occasionally back in the day.
I would assume that the answer to DSD or DSF, either way, is no:
But if you’ve seen evidence it’s supported, hopefully somebody will give you the answer you’d prefer.
Reading a little bit about DSD, it looks like the most “Sony” thing ever. If you don’t want to lose quality, maybe it’s worth migrating to FLAC or good-bitrate AAC for the playback flexibility, but keeping your DSD/DSF files somewhere safe as “originals”.
I agree with you and decided like the only way I can get DSD/DSF to even play, not counting Plex is to have a dedicated music player and a specialized DAC, which would defeat the purpose of using Plex. Figured using a widely supported format like FLAC will do me better justice. Nonetheless thanks for the help! That also reminds me, need to find some MP3 rips of Tracker music because some are really great to listen too.
I plays dsf files perfecly fine. I dont know if it transcode them in any case, but on android it does.
On pc, you should use hqplayer. It is a different world! The dev is a genius!
